Anyone who's seen my avatar (and knows what it is) may realise that I am a fan of the long running BBC TV show Dr Who. Are there any other fans of the series here? Anyone looking forward to the new series later this month - showing on BBC1 in the UK and BBC America in the US? Or am I the Lone "Anorak" here?:emb:

I saw the season premiere and I liked it. My wife is the Who fan in the family.

One thing I just found out - the mini-series Sherlock (completely modern take on the story) was written by Steven Moffat - I had no idea until she mentioned we should watch it.

Quite impressed with it - and it's available from Netflix streaming if anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Now that the series is actually under way, what does anyone think of the episodes so far...
1. The Impossible Astronaut
2. The Day of the Moon
3. Curse of the Black Spot....?

1. The Impossible Astronaut - Pt 1 Cracking start with good pacing to the new series which ....
2. The Day of the Moon - Pt 2 ... continues & concludes very cleverly in this episode.
3. Curse of the Black Spot - imho the weakest of the series to date but a fun episode nonetheless.
4. The Doctor's Wife - Very clever and touching story by Neil Gaiman.
5. The Rebel Flesh - Pt 1 - Good story line, but stretched too thinly between the two...
6. The Almost People - Pt 2 - ...episodes. Would have been better as slightly longer single episode.
7. A Good Man Goes to War - Mid Series Finale - SUPERB. If I just say that only a select few of the cast & crew knew the actual ending, that will give you an idea of the surprises in store. A MUST SEE.

And it all starts again on 3rd September for the final 6 episodes in Season 6 (all over by 8th October).

Excellent review Surfury! and one with which I couldn't agree more. The last episode in particular managed to really create a Cinematic atmosphere and really shows what's possible on a fairly limited budget.

Can't wait for the 3rd of September now. :oohyeah:

Glad you liked it. Bit simplistic but too the point. Re Eps 5 & 6 wish it had been compressed into a single longer episode as I said and then we had 7 episodes in second half of series. As we don't get ad breaks in Dr Who in UK it could have been editted to run as 2 episodes on the Bluray when that comes out.

Moffat has done a brilliant job so far. Was a bit worried when RTD left the series, but he's left it in very capable hands.

Moffat > Davies

I wonder if Tenant is kicking himself in the ass for leaving the show when he did. Season 5 & 6 (so far) have been real strong!

ive watched "when a good man goes to war" like 5 times since saturday and its sooo good. but more questions... more questions... lots and lots of questions!

we have to wait till September to "Kill Hitler"

That's the way to do it, always leave them wanting more. Think the time had come for Tennant to move on. A mid-series change would be a nice shocker for the future.

(Congrats on the post count Black btw reaching the magic 1,000 :))

I wonder if it won't be too long before we see David Tennant in the part again. Don't forget that he exists in that alternate dimension as a human living with Rose. But in the meantime, as Black says so many questions....

I still watch a lot of vintage Doctor Who, especially the Tom Baker era. I am not that keen on the new Doctor Who. The incidental music drives me insane. I think most of the time is's so intrusive and over bearing. Sometimes it feels like the composer has more airtime than the actors.

I never really bothered with much of the old stuff, but i will eventually. for now we look forward to the christmas special and then the wait is back on.
