There is no VAT free limit upto 135£ from Europe to UK .
What you are seeing on Amazon Europe is UK vat being applied to your order instead of local vat. Since those rates are similar you are not seeing much difference in a order below 135£.

If your order is above 135£ from anywhere in the world you will pay import duty even if you paid VAT.
Scrap my last post, I've just gone through the gov.uk publications again and my understanding is;

There is no additional VAT or import duty due on EU to UK consumer purchases up to £135.
- if you buy something from amazon France and it's 30euro (inc FR VAT) at checkout, that's all you'll pay.
- if you buy something from amazon France and it's 175euro, you pay $35 extra in UK VAT. No import duty.

20% UK VAT due on all ROW orders, no matter their cost, with import duty (approx 3%) due on orders £135+
- if you buy something from amazon US that's $40, you'll pay $8 extra in VAT, no additional customs fees
- if you buy something from amazon US that's $300, you'll pay $69 extra in VAT and import duty total.

The situation for ROW purchases is essentially the same for £135+ orders as it always has been.
For purchases £15 - £135 we're actually better off as we're saving the 3% import duty.
However for purchases £1 - £15 we're worse off as 20% VAT is now applicable.

The situation for EU purchases is essentially the same for £1 - £135 orders as it always has been.
Purchases of £135+ are now subject to an additional 20% of UK VAT where they weren't before.

You have basically read it wrong
Try an order of 175€ on European Amazon.
I did.
You pay the VAT as "normal" on the purchase. In addition Amazon is adding import duty on top of that.
At least this is true of Germany Amazon to UK.

On the face of it, that's not true of Amazon France. There's nothing extra to pay, other than 20% UK VAT on £135+ orders.
I've just created a dummy order on amazon.de and they're only charging 20% as well. So I don't know what you're seeing.

They call it an 'import fees deposit' the same as amazon.com, but it's still only 20% of the total cost including shipping.

Interestingly enough though they don't actually seem to be double charging for VAT no matter the order value.
If you put a 30euro steel in your basket at amazon.fr and change the quantity to 6 it drops to 25euro each.

So when the 20% import fee deposit (UK VAT) kicks in, amazon then deducts 16.66% from each item value.
Which I'm guessing would be 20% FR VAT minus an import fee of 3.3%? I can't think of another rationale.

I think they don't need to collect FR VAT after the £135 limit is reached and UK VAT is collected instead.
Tried the same thing on amazon.de and 16.66% was deducted there as well, so it supports my thoughts.

That would mean import fees are applicable to orders over £135, but the originating country's VAT is not.
So we're not actually being penalised all that much where the originating EU country's VAT can be deducted.
Which kind of makes sense as Australian GST and USA sales tax etc.. have never been applicable to UK orders.

The VAT is not 20% in France and Germany. In Germany at least is more. That is why price is reduced when they apply UK VAT.

This is screenshot of order of goods costing 299€ with German vat.
They have removed German vat and added UK vat and import duty in the final import fees deposit section.

You are correct about this bit. Sorry my bad
No worries. This is all a bit of a head scratcher to be fair. Just shows how poorly the gov.uk advice pages are set out if we need to resort to debates and dummy EU orders to work out what the hell is going on

Question for y'all. Why don't premium retailers do larger print runs for massive titles like these? Surely the more copies sold, the more money the make.

It's fun to collect rare items, if everyone was able to get their hands on something I wouldn't have much interest in it.
Doubt many people would spend alot of money on these editions if they weren't limited.

Everybody thinks everything limited these days is automatically the best thing ever just because some knobhead increased its price on ebay the moment they pre-ordered it once sold out
There are REAL rareities out there and it would be nice to see more coming.
