With the image upside down on the back plate means that if you take both plates off and swap them over (easy enough) then the front will still be the right way up and the back will still be upside down. Thus the spine will still be correct. That's why it's been designed this way.

Simply putting the steelbook on your shelf without doing this means that yes, your spine will be upside down.

There might not be any, or it might already be upside down too. But yes, it's a possibility.

That's fair enough, but it's the only way to keep the spine the right way up. Unless WB have already had the steelbook put together in a 50/50 split with the 2 plates. Doubtful, and only useful if buying in-store.
