I like how this along with most of the other early Ultra limited steels are being sold at the standard zavvi pricing of £15.
..anyway think i got the last one cuz its now SOLD OUT: PART 2
. Today I watched (for the first time) Mars Attacks and Beetlejuice back to back to decide which one I would get and for which one I would cancel my pre-order, because I have the feeling Zavvi will start shipping them earlier than May 5 (which is in a week - the year is just flowing by).
I have come to a decision
And the one I kept my pre-order for, the winner is : Beetlejuice!
Mars Attacks is undeniably very weird and I love weird, MOVIE SPOILER!, it's rare to see such an expensive film ($100 million in 1996!) be so bizarre, it's crazy and it has a lovely B-movie feel to it, but ultimately it's all style and no substance, not a single character really 'exists', no one stands out, and I don't think I'll want to watch it again. What a cast though, too bad they weren't given proper roles.(you have someone's head on a something's body, and they end with someone singing with something on his arm and some other things next to him!)
On the other hand, Beetlejuice --
-- will have more replay value, the story is more focused, clear and engaging. It's simple but effective. I love the way they treated the 'rookie ghosts' in this film, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis' characters, who're not able to scare the family, and the way Burton twisted the idea of the family not being scared by the ghosts but instead wanting to make profit off of them. Winona Ryder has the typical Burtonesque character and she's pretty good in it. Also, it's very funny, particularly thanks to Michael Keaton and the cartoonish feel of his character.
The Mars Attacks steelbook looks good but I wish I had liked the movie more. To save some €£$, I had decided to keep only the best one and that will be Beetlejuice.
