Best Buy to phase out physical media and exclusives in store/online in 2024

This could be interesting. If amazon doesnt absorb this business, think it could damage the market as a whole. I would think the US market foots a decent part of the bill for the WWA steelbooks being used around the world in the premiums.

I don't think it changes anything, as Best Buy didn't have any of the titles I usually buy, except for that rare steelbook or two. It was a place for casual buyers, that are now watching streaming. We, the serious collectors, buy everything online for a while now.
It would actually be better if steelbook exclusives were with an easier to access store, than 'racist' towards foreigners Best Buy, not even shipping to mail forwarders. Good riddance, I say. :bored:

Physical stores in general are struggling anyway so It makes sense to give priority to floorspace for items that will shift and make them seriously money like phones, washing machines etc. Goods that need to be seen and can still be viable to stores on the high street. 100% of my discs now i get online. I think HMV is the store i would ever actually go in and buy discs in person. Also the vanity labels love you buying direct as it's 100% profit for them.
Problem is Best Buy is quite literally the worst retailer. I can’t think of a retailer that doesn’t have a 30 day return policy, except for one: Best Buy. They’ve spent the last 2 years systematically alienating me (and I suspect others) by first changing the rewards program right after the new year started (which means if you just got some elite level, it went bye bye less than 6 months after it started for you).

Then theres’ the fact that they charge more for physical media than anyone else. I rarely buy any media from them now and I try to only do it if the steelbooks go on sale.

We don't have a best buy in the UK and physical media seems to have been making a comeback in the uK in shops.

With Walmart announcing they are taking over / buying (not sure exactly), physical media distribution, I would guess I’ll be moving my group buys over there.

Best Buy never handled steelbooks directly anyway, it was all drop shipped

exclusives moving elsewhere is fine by me... what concerns me is where?
Target is phasing our physical media in stores and Walmart is the worst with shipping. Walmart is also always delayed.
For all their faults, almost all my pre-orders from Best Buy would arrive Sat or Mon before release day... with Amazon, Target and Walmart, 9 out of 10 are after release day.
For regular releases, not a big deal but when it comes to limited steelbooks and the damage factor... its a big deal...

Well, from your personal perspective I understand your position. But, in general, it will change american steelbook market. Most steelbooks released in US were Bestbuy exclusives. This includes all Disney Steelbooks, all Lionsgate 4K steelbooks, majority of Warner steelbooks. Now when Bestbuy will be gone, it’s not clear what happens to those future releases and what the quality will be

Meanwhile, Walmart has been in talks with DVD distributor Studio Distribution Services (SDS), a joint venture of Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., to assume management of portions of its physical-media operations, Media Play News reported this summer.

From this:

100% improving in the past few years. Able to pick stuff in the likes of HMV now from vanity labels like Arrow.
They always did, unless you have some stats to back it up all I am seeing is a decline. Just talking stores, there is only HMV even the supermarkets have dramatically decreased what they have.
Online might be doing ok but I haven’t seen any stats recently for home media sales.

Just from an observation point going into shops. As for online, I can't keep up with the releases to the point I've having to cut back big time. Too many coming out I want.

More than once, in their Southern California locations, I’ve had to ask for the titles and wait while a clerk checks the storeroom.
This actually causes a loss in sales and the retailer should be liable for it.
I'll tell you one thing, the lack & closure of physical media stores in all my shopping centres spelled the fall for them all.

It definitely is with Steel, because if you ask for something on teh floor, not only do you have to wait, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll grab an undamaged copy. Worse still, if you say I need a better copy, there’s a decent chance they’ll say that’s the only copy, even though by looking online, it’s clear they have many copies available.

ASnother thing BBY is doing is saying things that are sold out, when stores have a dozen copies in each store (see Guardians 3).
Finally, their price gouging has got to be hurting sales too of Amray media too, because they’re charge 5-10 dollars over competitors.

Looks to me like the Best Buy listing you have pictured is the 4K and the Amazon listing is just the Blu-ray.

So $33.99 for 4K at Best Buy and $24.96 for the Blu-ray at Amazon.
