To be completely fair, I love 2049 because it fully embraces the ideas and themes put forth in the first one, while also being its own thing. It felt like a true sequel and a great standalone. Plus I'm a Gosling fanboy.

Completely agree, maybe it's because I only ever saw the original Blade Runner in 2018 just before I watched 2049 but I dont get the hype at all

2049 though is just one of the best Sci Fi films I've seen in years

That's exactly how I watched it too. I watched the original Blade Runner the night before, and then the next day I went to the theatre. Lemme tell ya, that IMAX makes all the difference when a movie is THAT atmospheric.
