Am I right that the process to get the replacement disc is to take the Steelbook with the defective disc to the local hmv store and get it replaced?

If you bought it online, they'll send it in the post. If you bought it instore you have to return it to the store. This applies to both the Steelbook and the regular amaray version.

Does anyone know if any future copies of this will have the correct disc? I'd like to keep mine sealed for now but don't want one with a dodgy disc. Ideally I'd like to return for a replacement but is there a point, if they're all faulty?

I would imagine if you returned it at the moment they may send out another steelbook with the correct disc separately. I'm pretty sure all the future steelbooks will have the correct disc in so you might want to wait and see what happens before returning it, especially if you are looking to keep it sealed.

At last, someone with some facts :)

I notice the original post about destroying steelbooks has now been deleted...

yeah because it's total bull

anyone who's had to repalce discs before will know that you only have to send the disc back (Apocalypse Now from Canada, Gladiator from the UK, The Beyond from the UK Pirates of the Carribean from the US etc)

sometimes not at all and tyou keep both discs

from experience, HMV will proberly email you via your order history and either ask for the disc to be sent to them in order to exchange it or they will just send you the corrected disc without having to send the faulty one back

never once have i seen a disc replacment program ask for the packaging back!!!

and just to qoute the OP
