No one is safe in the Steelbook world. Thinking of owning a rare Steelbook is like a ticking timebomb.

Only if you have paid well above retail for the steelbook in question. Otherwise, you have received the enjoyment that ownership provides.

Out of the two this is the one that i wanted the most - i have been contemplating breaking my £50 rule for a copy of Captain America 3D recently.

But when i look beyond my own personal needs, i see that what zavvi are doing is speeding up the death of the rare steelbook.

see, whenever a steelbook becomes so popular & hard to find that it commands a crazy high price on the secondary collector's market, be sure that sooner or later a retailer like zavvi will cash in and flood the market with comparatively cheap re-releases or re-prints of that title. killing the rarity in one fell swoop.

so no "rare" steelbook is truly safe if it has a hint of popularity guys - if you collect in the hope that one day u can make a little something because its supposed to be a "rare collector's item" like that classic car u've been eying up, think gain sucker cuz that **** will get printed again and again and again and again :movie:

I partially agree with what you say for the most part but I think there are still rare titles and a great example would be the recent rerelease of Star Trek. I and I'm pretty sure many still consider the original Play.com release as rare because even though same artwork, the contents were much better with Play.com's release with it having 3 discs as opposed to single disc with the Zavvi rerelease. Or don't you think its rare??? I'm in the thought that rereleases are opportunity mainly for new collectors to get sucked into this addiction that are "Steelbooks" because if my memory is correct has there been a rerelease that has been exactly the same as the original release with the same artwork, discs, slips and all??? I don't think so but I might be wrong. I still believe there are rare titles but then again I'm a sucker

no that's utter BS IMO - new collectors are brought in through new releases of big new movies like Man of Steel or IM3 - i think re-releases are mainly about sucking out $$$$$ from the secondary market. Basically Zavvi want a piece of $150 ebay Thor.

Some really good points and views getting thrown out here. I do have the original and ill be getting this as well as I'm a collector. The ones who are going to really be against this are those thinking of resale value or those that paid well over the odds for it. I'm a collector and this no doubt will be a great release. It doesn't mean the original version is less rare of course it isn't, it might be worth a bit less so what. This is the way steelbook collecting goes. I'm glad Zavvi are really going for it with all these releases. If people want to buy steelbooks in the hope they'll be worth something then play that game and you will lose. Steelbooks to me have personal worth nothing else

based on wreck saying in the thor thread, that thor would use pre agreed artwork (previously seen on amamray releases) i took that principal to mock up a captain america using that as a guideline.
