The top quote was the one I was replying to regarding people missing out.

A collector's market is such a wide spectrum. People collect all sorts of things, some rare, some not. The question we need to ask ourselves is why we collect them in the first place.

Is it because we love the items, because they're rare, because they fit into one of our interests or a combination of the above? If someone collects something only because it's rare, they're collecting for the wrong reason IMO. If they're collecting only because it'll be more valuable in 10 years time then they're not a collector, they're a businessman.

I collect steelbooks in the sense that I have a collection of them. But only ones I want, that I'll watch and enjoy. I'm the only person I know personally that has any Blu-ray steelbooks as none of my friends are interested. I wouldn't care though if they all had Captain America in a steelbook. Good for them.

There is nothing wrong with collecting only for rarity. When you sell a limited edition product, you attract those type of collectors. For me personally, I think Steelbook collecting is a mix of things. It is about the film and the artwork primarily, but also about exclusive and rarity. If it was just about artwork, I would buy posters. If it was just about the film, I would buy regular versions (and save myself a hell of a lot of money). Steelbooks are limited edition products, it is their nature, it always has been, but some studios and retailers are trying to change this and for me personally, it is spoiling the hobby.

IMO I disagree that because we collect something 'rare' we are in this for the wrong reason? Everyone collects for their own reasons.

There is no right or wrong in collecting. Everyone is different.

Absolutely right. People do collect for their own reason, that's why I said 'IMO'.

What I kind of object to is people who buy something just because it's rare. Yes, they can of course, it's their right. But if they've bought something they don't even want, just to say they have it and that no one else can, well, I don't see the point.

But unless it is a exact copy then it is still rare, buying things as an investment is always a risk, as the prices will always vary.

Would all you rare collectors be upset if there where to do a Japanese reprint of the dark knight rises more in line to the other white versions, so what is different to this?

Not disagreeing with this comment just wondering why with every reprint people get so arsey

I think that statement is ridiculous!! I collect modern art most of which is rare and to say that I am collecting for the wrong reason is utter rubbish..
I collect it because I love Modern Art, but also because its rare and unique and not widely available to everyone...

I object to people buying a BMW series 3 because I think it's a waste of money (the example you mentioned), and the limited edition add on is even more waste of money. I can say that is 'IMO'.

Who is it for me to say why you choose to buy a BMW series 3?

The same here, who is it for you to say why we shouldn't collect?

Yes, but you're missing the point.

You're not only collecting modern art because it's rare are you? You're collecting modern art because you love it and it also happens to be rare. That's a combination of reasons which is what I said originally (even bolding out the relevant combinations).

tenderthebear,

with all do respect my friend, I think you need to respect why people collect. We have listened to why you say you collect and to be honest, you have already said this countless times I can even recall on the Play.com and FS Iron Man threads. Yes I have a good memory and remember everything :)

I've heard you say how you don't care about releases etc etc but you are digging yourself further.

Let's just leave it as that.

Yes I agree with that..;)

Some people do collect for rarity/value only. One person I can think of is stevo. Whilst I hardly ever agree with his points and don't share his view of collecting, I can respect why he collects the way he does.

Off topic I know, but I just wanted to ask, how long have you been collecting for?

I didn't say you shouldn't collect. I've agreed enough times that people should buy for whatever reason they want. I've also said I don't personally see the point of buying something only because it's rare. IMO the rarity should be secondary to another reason.

As for owning a BMW, well, replace it with any car of your choice. The original point was that cars, like steelbooks get newer upgraded versions all the time. As do books (always being reissued with new covers), CDs (with bonus tracks) and so on and so on.

The first steelbooks I got ironically were the HMV exclusives of Captain America and Thor. I ordered them at the same time, so it was whenever the latter of the 2 was released.

Well your opinion is not respected by me. Everyone has opinions but to say we are collecting for the wrong reasons because it is rare is a ridiculous opinion to disclose here with hundreds of people reading these threads, and as you can see a few members have voiced back at that.

Just like I respect your opinions (even though I don't agree with them), next time be more 'tactful' and considerations on certain opinions you wish to disclose here.

Wow its getting heated in here... Cat amongst pigeons... I love movies. Therefore I get the steel of the movies I love. I'm all for the rereleases for those people who never managed to get/got into the Steel business late.

Then I apologise if I came accross as tactless.

Everything we write on forums is our own opinion. If you collect something simply because it's rare, that's fine. It works for you and that's all that matters at the end of the day.

I like to think of the FS version of Iron Man in these situations. I wanted an Iron Man steelbook and was fortunate to get the Play.com version. It suits my needs (I prefer the design anyway) but people mocked my choice as I didn't own the 'holy grail' version. That's fine. I'd rather someone who wanted it has it instead.

I agree with you in principal  But pple seem to ignore the fact that you were not impossing your opinion as truth :(
They would rather jump on a couple of lines and take the conversation out of context and in an entire different direction
Why is it some opinions are frowned upon?????

Ac-welcome to HDN-the release is a few months away, but as soon as art is available, we will post it (or, of course if it appears at zavvi.com).

To chat about Steelbook collecting in general, please feel free to visit this thread, so the title-specific threads continue to be used for the specific title in the thread title. Thanks!
