Absolutely right. People do collect for their own reason, that's why I said 'IMO'.

What I kind of object to is people who buy something just because it's rare. Yes, they can of course, it's their right. But if they've bought something they don't even want, just to say they have it and that no one else can, well, I don't see the point.

thbear (and other Steelbook openers) - when I was a kid I used to collect Garbage Pail Kids (among other things) and me and my best buddy at the time were on a mission to get all of them. I got all of them in the end and they are all in pristine condition (Yes, I do still have them stashed away :p). My buddy, who I still speak to once in a while, wishes he still had all his instead of sticking them to his cupboard doors and bedhead when he was a kid.

We both collected the same thing in 2 very different ways. There was no right or wrong, just preference. And we both had fun collecting them.

Steels are my current version of that. The original HMV artwork of Captain America is GPK 1a and the re-release artwork from Zavvi will be 1b. And they will all stay sealed because that's me and that'show I like to collect. Always have

To object to the way a fellow collector collects is not looking at the bigger picture. You don't see many folk who keep their steels sealed complaining about others who open theirs. But when I tell someone I keep mine sealed I get asked loads of questions about why and I get judged or branded. I still don't understand why but it doesn't bother me one bit anyway so no harm.

At the end of the day we are mostly all on this forum now because we share a passion for the same thing. Thank god we all have different tastes because it would get boring quite fast if we were all the same. Just because the next person collects in a different way don't let that concern you or bother you, just accept them for who they are and what they bring to the same hobby that you enjoy.

To your point about cars, give me a classic any day of the week. And I wish they would bring out Garbage Pail Kids Steelbooks too :p

DB - hopefully I kept this on topic enough for it not to be moved ;)

Sunny, another thread has been created in the chat forum for general Steelbook buying chat. We create 1 thread for each Steelbook release (there are now 1000's), so folks can chat about that title. Of course we have collectors and or/movie fans on all shades of the spectrum, and we encourage everyone to start threads for those more general topics:)

Didn't think you would :p

Perhaps it's too much to ask for a Garbage Pail Kids Movie to get the steelbook treament. Embossed with the shape like a garbage can would be ideal.

On topic, you never know, maybe Zavvi's new design will blow the existing one out of the water.

Sunny, actually we would, but this topic of re-releases causes a lot of passion to be roused on both sides of the fence. We only move or delete posts when necessary to maintain the friendly vibe at HDN.

Personally, I hope they come up with good art for this one, I enjoyed the film:scat:

DB - k noted, FYI myself and tenderbear have patched things up on PM and we enjoyed our banter and debate on good terms :) - thanks for not deleting the posts! We all learn things from each other.

As for CA - I would like this artwork to go with CA 2 as I can just tell Disney are going to re-release something totally different, having seen Iron Man 3 and Avengers with very similar releases.

Just to back up what Sunny said. In fact, there was nothing to patch up. Just 2 differing views on a subject we're both passionate about.

With Disney's eventual release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's more likely that the original HMV version of CA will match better (assuming that forthcoming releases stick with logo motifs). That said, IM3 will be the last Marvel steelbook with the Paramount logo on the spine (not that The Incredible Hulk matches either).

Well your opinion is not respected by me. Everyone has opinions but to say we are collecting for the wrong reasons because it is rare is a ridiculous opinion to disclose here with hundreds of people reading these threads, and as you can see a few members have voiced back at that.

Just like I respect your opinions (even though I don't agree with them), next time be more 'tactful' and considerations on certain opinions you wish to disclose here.

As far as I can tell tenderheartbear didn't say that collectiong for rarity is wrong. What he actually said was that if you only collect something because it's rare he thinks that's wrong. And I agree. Because then you're essentially a ticketscalper. You don't care about the movie, the artwork or anything other than that it's rare.

That doesn't mean that you can't have a few titles that you don't care about except for the fact that it's rare. I'm sure you've had or still have some titles that you only have because they're rare but that's not the sole reason why you're collecting steelbooks. It might be the main focus of your collection but you clearly like movies and the artwork on most or all of the steelbooks you own.
But please correct me if I'm wrong.

For the record I don't think tenderheartbear ever showed any disrespect or lack of tact.

EDIT: Taken to PM instead because this has nothing to do with the CA thread.

My views is already here:

Is it because we love the items, because they're rare, because they fit into one of our interests or a combination of the above? If someone collects something only because it's rare, they're collecting for the wrong reason IMO.

IMO I disagree that because we collect something 'rare' we are in this for the wrong reason? Everyone collects for their own reasons.

There is no right or wrong in collecting. Everyone is different.
