The front with embossing is absolutely gorgeous...no question there.
But I still wish the spine had the title and the back had better artwork.

Doesn't the North American release have a Debossed title? If so, it won't have the embossed Shield and plane interior.

Am I the only one who thinks the front debossing is the weirdest ever? The right upper part, like on the left the line should be straight since it follows the opening. But instead, they debossed the... sunlight? on the right. Just doesn't make sense.

There's no pleasing some folks!
And there's no critical thinking in some others.
But seriously, I'm the guy that usually never has a problem with a release. I don't care about matt vs. gloss finish (because both can work great), I don't care about title/no title either on the front or the spine (because I usually know which movies I buy), I don't dismiss the lack of inner artwork (because it just isn't that big of a deal to me), I'm pretty lenient when it comes to artwork (because I don't really like to strongly criticize something that's very subjective).
The only thing I do have a problem with is blatant mistakes. For example, when they choose the wrong color for something that can only be represented by one color (like Filth). Or when they leave some artifacts that aren't supposed to be in the image because they didn't pay attention during photo editing (like Fantasia). Or when they add debossing based on the color tone, not the actual image itself, almost as if they have no idea what they're actually trying to represent with the debossed edges (like here).
If such obvious mistakes aren't enough of a reason to start questioning the artistic decisions of a release, then nothing is.
In this case though they were obviously aiming for something unique with the release (and achieved that).And there's no critical thinking in some others.

I've never seen anything other than the boring standard picture frame border before, they chose to show they can do something more interesting than that and make it part of the actual design.
It would have been an awful lot simpler for them to stick to the outside line of the hangar bay but they chose not to and to go for something more intricate - point being, like it or not, in this case it's clearly not a mistake but a design decision.
I for one appreciate their ability to think outside of the box (or rectangle, even
).

It was clearly intentional. It's a hell of a lot more complex to deboss a border like that than a straight edge - if it was a mistake, it wouldn't follow the light pattern on the Steelbook.

The way these are usually done (not steelbooks per se, but general image-to-layered object application) is by converting an image to fewer colors, then auto-detecting the borders between the colors you pick to be representing the +/- sides, be it a debossing, stitching (on fabric materials) or anything of the sort. This one gives an impression of someone overlooking the fact that the selected borders don't really represent the image.

Curious why UK guys would want to order this version. The Zavvi one will be the same, right? Like IM3, they won't just have embossing for one country.

No no, I completely understand what you're saying and am 99.9% sure that was intentional on their part - there's no way that would have got through the QA/testing then retail manufacturing process without someone at Scanavo asking if that's really what they intended, not for as high a profile release as this.
If it were a mistake, at the very least I'd expect it to end up going in like this and follow the red lines I added, resulting in it going into the corner highlighted in the red box in that sort of shape:

It wasn't directed at you specifically.I'm not going to say I'm 100% sure it wasn't intentional, because there's really no way for us to know, but to me personally it really does seem like a case of someone not paying enough attention.
See my post above, I edited it to add a picture, the red lines added to illustrate the path I'd expect it to take if it were a mistake.
If you still don't think I have a point, then we can just agree to disagree
