I don't really get the over-zealousness with gloss finishes or even embossment. I have plenty of flat, matte steels that I think look great and don't think either additional finish would help to improve them.

As for this steel, I think it looks fine, the back makes sense considering the front as far as logical progression. While the inside is kinda plain, it does give the perspective of how isolated they were during the whole hijacking.

As for the rest, should have been gloss. Otherwise its just any other steelbook release. Interior, I'm mixed on. It could have been maybe the bridge of the ship with Tom Hanks looking outward to the skif. But it's doable.

Unfortunately I think it increases the likelihood of loose discs. I went to TWO Best Buys today and each one had 7 copies of Captain Phillips in steelbook and every one had loose discs. It doesn't really matter since I open my steelbooks and the disc wasnt scratched, but it could have been...

Garbage. The gotta have it factor for this one has just hit the floor. Lame back. Boring interior. Matte finish. I'll just get the amaray.

I agree that a glossy finish would have been better, but the steelbook price is the same as the amaray ($25), so I bought the steelbook.

was looking forward to getting this but have to agree the back art is a awful as is the inside art and a matte finish is extremely poor, if a steel ever needed gloss this was it, pass for me

Easy choice for me. This or the amaray for the same price. I like it. Cant wait to watch the movie as I haven't seen it yet. Poor people across the pond have to wait a few weeks. That would explain the hostility in this thread IMO as they have yet to even hold one in their hands.

I'm "across the pond" and i kinda like it.
People going on about the back not going with the front. If it did, it would be another pic of the ocean : hilarious.
Really looking forward to getting this as it was my fave film of last year. How Tom Hanks is not up for an Oscar, is a disgrace!!

No we just have half decent eyesight. I don't need to hold this in my hands to see that it isn't very good

Bummer...just checked my tracking number and it won't be here until Thursday. Is it really that difficult to ship in a manner that gets it in the consumer's hand on the same day as it's release? Why can't everything be amazon prime?

Yes, it does stink pretty bad. The artwork is low resolution, especially on the back. With all of the water shown on the front this called for a glossy finish.

And on the inside we are given a bird's eye view of nothing but water. Just because we don't get very many steelbooks released in the U.S. does not mean I have to settle for crumbs. That is for the birds. Major fail.

This is a dissapointing steel imo. I just feels and looks "cheap". They didnt even bother using the 2 disc inserts and just stack the dvd and bluray on one peg which has caused a lot of them to have loose discs. A year ago this and Elysium would have been glossy and not powder matte since they are sony releases but some serious corners are being cut now smh. New releases getting catougue wave finishes now. Not good.

All 8 copies at my Best Buy had loose discs. There was music coming from the electronics department and I was tempted to pick up 2 of the steelbooks and use them as maracas.

I don't mind the lack of gloss, but I think it would have looked nice if the title had been embossed. Again that is my personal opinion, so if you love it- go for it!

Tell me about it. I actually drove in in though to pick up my copy lol. I was already on the road so that made it an easier of a decision for me.

i walked around my best buy with this in hand for about 15 min. checking out other blu's. i ended up putting back on the shelf. the slipcover didn't look great either.

i am happy to support U.S. steel releases...but they should put a little more effort put into the steelbook releases. makes me appreciate zero dark thirty all the more.

Make sure you guys and gals check them for Loose Discs! There were about 3 or 4 that were loose.

Thanks for the pics! I quite like it, although I would've preferred the back to have followed on from the front/spine, even if it meant it was just an image of water like the inside - would have made it pretty mysterious imo.

I picked up my copy at store opening yesterday. There were 6 or 7 on the rack. First two had loose discs and various flaws. The third one was money

I have to agree with the general sentiment: although I personally wouldn't mind this artwork if it were printed well, this steelbook unfortunately does look cheap and I daresay the art looks BETTER in the photos posters have shared above than it does in RL... :/

i guess i got luck with my instore pickup order, made the order first thing yesterday for it, couldnt pick it up because of the snow storm

today they were all sold out, and i was worried that i might have the regular combo pack waiting for me but whoever was in charge of getting the order yesterday must have been a bright employee because not only was it the steel but it was a minty mint copy. Very happy to have this.

Got mine yesterday. I like it. I agree on some things about it. But overall I am ok with it. It is much better than the some of the "waves" they have put out. Some of those have been cheap feeling and looking. The major complaint I had was the disc. Why the heck did they slap one on top of the other. That is just stupid IMHO.
