Conan O'Brien and the Tonight Show mess

So apparently the whole move Leno to an earlier time spot didnt exactly work out, and now NBC is trying to move him back into the time slot where Conan and The Tonight Show currently occupy (11:35 ET). But Conan wont budge, and its starting to maybe look like a stand off between Conan and NBC.

Heres a statement made by Sir O'Brien recently:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

I dont know if this is a product of low ratings for Conan hosting the tonight now, or NBC trying to get Leno into a later time slot or what, but if the screw Conan over I'll be done with NBC. That was the only show i even watched on that network.

Although I like both Conan and Jay, I would also be done with NBC if they screw Conan. Jay had The Tonight Show for a long time and Conan earned the position. I think Jay should man up and run off to have his show on Fox or something like that. Then it would force NBC to give Conan his spot back.

Either way, if NBC screws this up then screw NBC.

FU Jay Leno! his old ass should have stayed retired and worked on his dumb cars.

Conan leaving the Tonight Show

NEW YORK – NBC said Thursday it has reached a $45 million deal with Conan O'Brien for his exit from the "Tonight" show, allowing Jay Leno to return to the late-night program he hosted for 17 years.

Under the deal, which came seven months after O'Brien took the reins from Leno, O'Brien will get more than $33 million, NBC said. The rest will go to his staff in severance, the network said in an announcement on the "Today" show.

His final show will be Friday, and Leno will return to "Tonight" on March 1.

"In the end, Conan was appreciative of the steps NBC made to take care of his staff and crew, and decided to supplement the severance they were getting out of his own pocket," his manager, Gavin Polone, told The Wall Street Journal. "Now he just wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible."

O'Brien will be free to begin another TV job as soon as September, NBC said.

O'Brien landed the "Tonight" show after successfully hosting "Late Night," which airs an hour later, since 1993. But he quickly stumbled in the ratings race against his CBS rival, David Letterman.

Under Leno, the "Tonight" show was the ratings champ at 11:35 p.m. Eastern, but he proved an instant flop with his experiment in prime time.

I hope he comes back and CRASHES AND BURNS!!!!! I fraking HATE Leno with a passion. My prediction is that Letterman has picked up alot of the Leno fans because Conan just wasn't for them and I don't think they will go back to Leno after watching Letterman the past few months. This is what I am hoping. I've wanted Letterman to win this late night battle since i started watching this stuff in the late '80's. Time for a winner...GO LETTERMAN!

do you think he'll get a talk show, or do you think it'll be some different type of show he hosts, something maybe like the soup or something like opra? (except funny of course!)

I think he will probably get another talk show. It'll be interesting to see what offers he gets. I would imagine he wants a late night show again, so then he doesn't have to edit his material for censorship reasons.

It would be pretty funny to see him take over for Oprah though. :hilarious:
