Just an fyi, for every time you'll ask this, zero has only been commonly used in the last few years. Old steels don't have it.
You're misinformed there. Zero finish has been in use for 10–15 years and is nothing new.

According to the manufacturer Scanavo, Unforgiven (released in 2015), V for Vendetta (released in 2016) and Hacksaw Ridge (released in 2017) use a zero finish.

What I always find difficult is distinguishing a zero finish from a satin finish.

The zero finish we have now has not been used for 10-15yrs. 100% not. The quality is drastically different, so much so that it should not even be classed as the same. Zero and satin are very easy to distinguish in hand. They feel totally different.

Not much has changed at Zero Finish itself over the last 10–15 years. What you mean is the general manufacturing quality. For example, there are Steelbooks with a high-quality matt finish and Steelbooks that have this cheap streaky finish. The difference can be explained by how thick the coat of paint is applied. The studios should Scanavo communicate clearly that quality is desired.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. With the Unforgiven Steelbook, I could have sworn it was a satin finish. The colors are vibrant and the surface feels quite smooth. I think the Battleship Steelbook from 2012 uses a satin finish.

I still remember the Warner Steelbook waves that you could buy at Saturn and Media Markt about 10 years ago. The Steelbooks were matt, but very thin and cheaply painted. At Scanavo, the client seems to have a say in how high-quality the paintwork is.

I also notice differences in the thickness of the metal. The embossed Django Unchained Steelbooks from 2013 were very thin.
