First time in having to deal with customs.

As nornal my US buddy has sent me some stuff via a gift. Just checked tracking (USPS.com) about an hour ago it changed to

November 28, 2013 , 7:14 am
Payment of charges - Item being held, addressee being notified
UNITED KINGDOM

If an item is marked as a gift, how have I got to pay customs? Do I just wait for a letter to come through the door or do I contact them? If so, how?

Also, would it best a contact number from my is buddy to give to them incase they want evidence of the package actually being a gift?

Sadly yes, depends on Gift valuation as postage is added and if over limit then you as recipient have to pay VAT on the whole amount. Sometimes USPS's tracking may say "Item being held" but it isn't
