Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

Exactly. Sometimes we buy extra Steels and sell them with the intention of making some profit and use it to purchase more Steelbooks but it looks like that strategy won't pay off on majority of the Steelbooks nowadays as there are way too many of them floating around.

Maybe it has to do with less and less 'exclusive' artwork. Remember the Futureshop Watchmen steelbook? Went for $150 on ebay in the past. Now with everyone having that same artwork, it doesn't make sense to try to sell it at $150...no one would buy it.

Maybe the studios venture these forums and figure they can get in on that cash be re-releasing artwork to everyone.

How the times have changed. I often find a better return on opened steels as opposed to sealed copies. Was inevitable with pockets being stretched due to the sheer amount of releases. The more the better some said :hilarious: Look at values now. Trades in the trading section have been creeping. So many think the items are worth more than cost even though its not. Keep them coming lgans316.

Its laughable when you see an item priced at 1.5 times its value when still available in stores and online.

I find it absolutely amazing that 99% of the steels selling for less than expected, that our friend lgan listed doesn't effect me at all lol. I think I might have a "spider sense" or in this case, a "Stevo sense" or something. Or it could be that 80% of my collection is made of FS Disneys, and classic grails. That could be it.

I believe the market is in a state of decline due to the amount of films getting a release on steelbook. I sold all mine to pay for my wedding so it was worth collecting

I have found buying fewer blu rays and not getting so obsessed is more enjoyable.

If you are collecting to just collect for your enjoyment then there is no problem but deep down if you are like me and was collecting steelbooks just to sell them on as an investment it might be time to jump ship soon. This ship is sinking

I'm finding it less enjoyable as time goes on. I was browsing CEX's website the other day and noticed that they had the regular Blu-ray of Die Hard 2 for £1.50. Can I justify paying £15 just for the metal case? Can I justify £10 or even £5? I don't think I can.

Thanks for the good advise pal. I'll be sure to keep a close eye on the declining popularity of Disney. I'll be sure to jump ship when and if that Disney ship goes down.
