Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

Rod my advice is this, buy what you can afford :)

If your wife/partner has a go at you for buying too much thats normal (I hope :hilarious:)

If you struggling to pay off your bills then I think there is a problem!

I don't drink or smoke so it's not a problem I was thinking though this is getting a bit silly it's like now I will just get this then oh I need that, Ive just got the oz gladiator metal case the other day now I'm after a few of them metal cases nicer than steels :D

I've sold a few things on so it's mostly just like trading stuff I do think I need to calm it though TBH.

Rod - Create a monthly budget. Set a limit for how much you can spend during that time frame and once you go voer for the month your done. Its hard sometimes when movies suddenly pop up and you'll break it but at least if you have a number in mind you won't go too much over. I really found it curbs excess purchases and makes you really think what is your personal priotiry

I will try now I think I've only watched 2 of the movies :ohno:

Alot of films I've got for good prices thanks to being on here:thumbs: the most I paid for one is £60 I won't pay that again though .........be strong:ohno:

I am a lovely lady collector for many years. But even my partner rolls her eyes at some purchases I used to make (and sometimes still make). It has to do with priorities-if you can't eat because you're buying Steelbooks, maybe it's time to re-evaluate ;)

DB :hilarious: @can't eat. I think that's a bit extreme :ohno: I thought paying on my credit card was bad enough but not being able to eat, blimey lol

The second hand market can be a strange beast. I've seen 2 items close almost simultaneously. Same item. First was a buy it now for 39.99. Didn't sell. The second was a auction. Ended at 46.XX.. So while one copy might go cheap, others might fetch a better price so it truly has some ups and downs.

I also agree that it seems that there are more sellers than buyers. As it does seem that 2012 had a huge influx of steelbooks worldwide, and that might have something to do with it.

Oh really!? Hrm, I wonder what our very own Digital Babe would say to that. She might disagree with you there. In fact there are a few women that collect steels here on the forum. Steelbook collecting isn't only catered toward men. ;)

All these good advice, I thought good ole Stevo would add his 2 cents. In addition to all the other sagely advices, heres what I suggest. If you're collecting for value, stay away from early hype! This ones a major killer. I highly suspect that this is what happened to these titles (mostly Asian) that the OP mentioned. The people who were willing to pay a premium for them all got theirs, the rest of the people don't care that the Korean one is deemed more valuable than the French version, because of stickers. Thus, the price comes a tumblin down. Collect steels with very high appeal, and are highly liquid, even years down the road.

As for the grails, forget about them, unless your day job is something important and meaningful, like kicking, dunking, or throwing various types of balls. Other than that, you'll find yourself pan handling for change on the street corner, as I have had to resort to at various times.

It depends on how you view your collection, I didnt and dont buy steelbooks as any kind of investment or look at them on the shelf as some kind of status symbol, the only time I would be concerned about the value of them now is if for any reason one of my now OOP steels needed to be replaced, then I would have to decide weather I wanted to replace it so badly that I would pay crazy money for a copy or if I could live with the damaged one.

The steelbook market is overcrowded, I think we all agree on that, and I think if anything is devaluing steelbooks its the studios who are overproducing them, not so much in quantity per title but in the amount of titles that get a steelbook release, when I first spotted a steelbook on a shelf (I think my first steel was 'scum' on dvd) they were a limited first print run similar to how we get slipcases now on the initial run of some titles, that made them special as they were only available for a limited time while stocks lasted, and they seemed to be few and far between, we got the odd wave of spacial edition collections such as the 'definitive collection' but overall they were reasonably rare and collectable, but then once there was a market and a new niche of collector out there BOOM steelbooks bloody everywhere and it kinda takes the fun out of it when the steelbooks seem as common, sometime more common than the amaray version

so yeah like others have said, some steels will always be tricky to find and expensive, others will be easy to get and cheap, but like everything, the people who buy them determine the 'going rate' and Id guesss one day like a lot of things once the demand has dropped so will the price

LOL, most of my collection consists of Action, Drama and thrillers. Neither the books nor movies of Twilight were spectacular. But I have a soft spot for eternal love, what can I say;)
