Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

Woooooow, paying $250 for a steelbook? That is crazy!! Why would that person had done that?? There are more copies at Ebay for less that half the price. That is just craziness.

I agree it's crazy, but people were paying more than $250 for Iron Man Futureshop. It's one of the most sought after steelbooks ever!

For a SEALED copy WITH stickers, I would have easily paid that and them some for that copy!! CONGRATS to the buyer! :naughty: and my condolences to the seller! :(

Looking at it upon further review, it was a "Buy It Now" feature. so I'm guessing the seller wasn't too keen on exactly what he had his hands on!

The appetite for these high valued steels / steels in general has been on a steady decline. Too many pre orders and the excessive amount of releases ensures there isn't enough $$$ left to snag these and re releases are killing prices of the originals. Lack of exclusive art has also ensured prices are kept in check and slips don't count for much anymore. Just a matter of preference. This is the new reality though there are some that think they can still command hefty prices like Socrates

Buying IM FS at $250 is crazy? LOL! I think it is SELLING IT at that price that is crazy!

FM it looks to me that it was not a BIN, it was an auction starting from $250. So it's not crazy, it's called the buyer got the best deal for an Iron Man FS sealed with sticker!

sunny it was an auction with starting price of $125 or BIN for $250

My bad.

A BIN normally wouldnt say 'bids' on there, it would normally say 'SOLD'. The listing showed '1 bid'.

Anyway thanks for the clarification, in the case the seller is a fool! I wouldn't say the value of FS is decreasing from that auction, the seller just didn't know about the value of IM FS.

I have a question for the collectors regarding the value of steel books.

Back in the day we had the VHS format and it is pretty likely that limited edition copies were released. At the time, I guess the value went up and down however, now that the format is obsolete, surely those tapes are worth F-ALL?

Then DVD came along. Same situation and most likely the copies that were rare then are cheap as chips now.

Now Bluray. I see steels like Iron Man FS go for over £400 and John Rambo for double that if not more but like all predeceasing formats, Bluray will be superseded by 4K and 8K and the whatever the F K.

How many of you collectors think that steels like John Rambo and Iron Man FS are likely to hold their value and INCREASE in say the next 20 years, when it is likely that upscaled exclusives are likely to hit the shelves?

I am confused. :wtf: Does this mean the seller is a fool but is not crazy? :wtf:

There are some extremely valuable items of every type of media stretching back as far as you want. Personally wasn't aware there was much of a market for rare VHS as "the infrastructure" ie the internet wasn't there, this was established though the DVD era, and then continued and accelerated in the High Def era which we are now in. 4K and beyond is still a dream to the average punter as other factors are involved.

Grails will probably always remain grails whatever it's the nature of the beast, as an example see how much you have to pay for an audiophile vinyl player these days. My comments from a few posts ago still stand mind.

I'm not personally into steelbooks to trade or resell them etc... so whether they will gain more value in the future isn't relevant to my buying decision. I buy the steelbooks because I like how they look, pure & simple. I get them, open them and watch :D

Ok I get it. It has nothing to do with the topic.

Oh I get it too, you're the funny one.

Since you obviously didn't get it, lemme clarify then: the subject of the thread is whether the steelbooks are decreasing in value to which I replied that, to me, that doesn't matter since I buy them for my own pleasure.

I think stating that it doesn't matter to you is not adding anything to the thread. I in many ways feel the same way about my collection. But it is important to also realize that there is more to collecting as this is an expensive hobby. For purposes of trading and selling, values are important.

Just try to add some value to the thread by adding info that is relevant to the topic in the OP. Try to bring some facts or opinions as to why steelbook values are decreasing / increasing ;)

The secondary market at the moment is very volatile. Too many releases is cutting spending budgets thus prices are not being pushed higher
