Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

The Asian steels are dropping in price because collectors now do not wish to pay the premium import price for a steel where you can get one identicle at your own country of release for cost price, regardless if it comes with a slip or sticker gimmick to differentiate one release to another.

Even the asian grails are now dropping in value slowly, such as Thor JP going on bids for just over £200, and T4 TW similar price with IM2 JP falling in the same region.

That was me, check it out I actually won a bargain on ebay:Dno way I was paying £27 for that :scat:
I've been noticing a trend in decreasing steelbook value lately on ebay but getting crazy the closer we get to xmas. I suppose timing has a lot to do with - lighting deals, black friday etc lack of money due to xmas spending on other stuff.

I don't know about the UK, but if I order directly from JB Hi-fi to the US, the steel can be had fairly cheap when combining shipping with some other items and/or promotions (right now, it's part of the 2 for $30 + $10 shipping makes it $20 average).

The best deal was for the two Star Treks...Worked out to around £22 delivered

i thought to bid on that skyfall but 12pound postage to germany..for me it wasn't worth for a worldwide released artwork

Just to throw in my 2 cents. I don't care about price when it comes to steelboooks. When I first noticed them, I thought, this thing is cool, What is it? It was an Anime of Hellsing. It was a G1 sized DVD, so I was like, I love it, but not for me.

Then I finally saw some in G2 sized. I was sold after that. I cannot afford, nor will I try to collect them all, but rather purchase the movies I want to see. Steels aren't going anywhere and I doubt they would ever just disappear. Even when 4k comes around. I believe if discs are physical, this will be in play. The only reason amaray is dominant is price, just like everything else with our society.

I buy them simply, because I like the cases and artwork. Doesn't matter if it's cheaply made. Just make em' and I will continue to buy them.

The wise thing to do is to stop buying from retailers and buy them cheaper on eBay. Retailers will be left with tons of dead stock and may soon realise that it is time to stop issuing so many steelbooks. And in the meantime, some people may take the opportunity to buy rare steels cheap....:)

Exactly what I have been doing of late. I've bought less than 10 "retail" steels in the last 3 months, but have bought over 20 "new/sealed" steels off eBay at drastically less than their so-called worth! Haven't paid more than £25 for a fair few most on here would say should be going for double that. In some cases I've paid a lot less than retail for Korean steels.

There used to be the odd good find on eBay but every day now there are bargains to be had with a little thought on how to bid.

most sellers on ebay.co.uk having really high shipping costs, example that from dusk till dawn maybe goes only for 11£ but shipping costs to germany would be + 13£ = 24£ total...not so cheap now and thats with most uk sellers, incredible shipping costs that destroy every deal for international bidders.
