Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

As I see it, open (but OCD mint) is a better buy for an investment. You can confirm there isnt any damage.

It always puzzles me that sealed means you tack on 20-50% value.

Most people that would collect sealed ones don't want to watch that copy. Rarity comes into it and just like any other collectable factory sealed items command a higher price as it's how it was when it was brought.

With sealed ones you can confirm it's the genuine article. If it's a steel with worldwide artwork then discs can be swapped along with the j-card on open copies plus it's essentially second hand which hits the value on anything.

I'd rather buy an open copy to watch but if I'm collecting then Sealed wins everytime.

A couple of months ago I began to believe this myself, but since the new year I'm seeing a great many steels reaching new highs. Thor, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Thing, WFRR, and many others.

I now believe the price drop prior to Christmas was brought about by the release of the next gen of games consoles wiping out everyone's leisure money. As the saying goes "we've never had it so good!"

Not sure what you guys are seeing, but when I search for completed "The Thing auctions" on ebay.co.uk I see plenty of new/sealed copies going for slightly over retail cost...The Incredible Hulk has maybe doubled its value, but that is still nothing to write home about considering the Marvel association...

The Thing Universal 100th Anniversary Edition is consistently hitting between £30 and £40 if sealed. The steelbook game is fast moving and constantly in flux, it looks as though many collectors are missing the latest trends.

Consistently hitting between £30 and £40??????

There is 1 auction where the best offer (under 39,99) was accepted and then there is this one for £11.52 and this one and this one and you can currently buy one for £22 and an auction is ending in a few hours for one that is currently at £13.... if you go back to October/November you can see them selling for £17... I might not have the finger on the pulse, but what I'm seeing now doesn't impress me too much!

I believe Godfather Blufans is $100 + shipping = £61 + shipping. This one went for almost cost price which I believe is a loss.

In my opinion, The GodFather is a big fluke. Honestly it's never good to resell a steelbook release it soon. Always wait to see if the rating increases or decreases.

Thread cleaned

Personal attacks won't be tolerated.

Personally I'd like to see a complete ban on any threads or posts mentioning steelbook re-sell prices. It promotes greed and arguments and it takes away from the spirit of true collecting.
Obviously it's helpful for all of us if we are discussing a NEW release and we all want to know the cheapest place to purchase but all this talk about used steelbooks resale prices is getting out of hand.

I didn't really see any personal attacks and it kinda makes me wonder why you can't discuss the value or non-value of steelbooks in the Steelbook Value Decreasing thread, but hey, I'm sure somebody had a very good reason to delete the posts. :scat:

Well after 8 posts of backwards and forwards it seemed that neither of you were going to give up and fellow members reported it as an 'ongoing battle' to both prove your points and to be honest, we try not to let things escalate

Hence why they were removed

By all means discuss as we encourage it but if you lock heads, just agree to disagree please

Its called a discussion not a battle, or are we not allowed to reply to posts anymore if we dont have the same opinion as someone else. Its not like there was any insults or hatred going on so there was no need to go to PM,s as everything was revelvant to this thread, I give up posting in this thread it all gets deleted anyway if a MOD doesnt agree with your opinion. :( its not like any of the delted posts were offensive in anyway. If people done wanna read conficting opinions about a steels value then why look in this thread? :naughty:
