Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

I want to share with you guys what I think is becoming a reality.

The value of the Steelbooks is decreasing every day, except of course for the "Grails" that will never decrease.

:violent:

Thank goodness I only buy steels for artistic design or the fact I like owning rare things like the Thor HMV sealed steelbook and displaying them for all to see!

Honestly, if youre looking to make money off speculation, youre better off buying a Bitcoin mining machine and leave it turned on 24/7. A lot less aggravation than keeping track of all steelbook prices worldwide.

^^ You're still beating this dead horse I see. :p

Several of the listings you're just linking to are misleading as they're either open or not mint.
But if this is what you consider fun I'm not gonna stop you. :)

Steelbook Value Decreasing?

Folks, I did not personally delete the few posts a bit back, but they went to far. This thread nor any of our threads are opportunities for you to personally attack someone, or defame them in any way. This thread is also not to accuse and attack anyone selling anything for profit. A lot of people love to post speculation or negative posts to create drama or elicit a reaction. Do not come into this thread trying to start a fight or peddling your 'rare' wares, and or belittling people for their buying or selling habits. For those looking at those posting links here of how values are falling, you may wish to look at the motives of the poster and overall history of their posts. Please try to avoid the unnecessary drama of fear mongering. Of course some Steels lose or gain value. But 'value' is subjective-and desirability completely different for everyone. If you find some people are being 'broken records' feel free to use the block feature if you don't want to see posts. If you are being personally attacked or threatened please 'report' the pm or threat.

What's your problem? What's wrong with posting? This is a forum right?

Did I mean any harm to anyone? No
Is it offensive? No
Does it talk about decrease in value? Yes

Did I say you were doing any of those things? No :p

I merely pointed out that several of the listings you were refering to were for opened or not mint steelbooks which you did not mention.
No harm in that, now is there? ;)

But please continue to post if you like. Even though I think your posts are somewhat misleading at times I do find them entertaining. Albeit not for the reason's you'd like me to probably.

thanks for posting the link to The World's End, chip! Been really curious what the signed steel goes for. I have my copy listed somewhere, but not really interested in selling it unless it gets "my price". Signed steels are kind of my thing now. Would much rather skip all the Blufans & Kimchi's to go to Cons around the country and have celebs sign my blu's. Unless of course I want said celebs to sign a Blufans or Kimchi edition.

I am new to Steelbook collecting, I have got the bug, bad, and it's taking over my life!

I'm struggling to understand why people would want to collect sealed Steelbooks though? Surely if you're lucky enough to own Thor and the Iron Man's etc., you'd want to enjoy the amazing finishes in all their glory and not through a glossy plastic film?

People are simply too impatient.. they expect a steelbook to become a grail within a few months and once they realise it doesnt steadily rise in value, they panic and try to get rid of it..

old play.com steelbooks like the thing or transformers were worthless a long time and now theyre going for 30gbp+

i guess it takes its time until most of the stock is allocated to ppl who truly want the steelbook and would never sell it.. and once that happens its value will rise..

Phase 1: Pre-Order Phase

75% of the stock is allocated to scalpers
25% to geniunely interested collectors

a certain percentage of interested collectors is left out

Phase 2: Collectors panic phase

Those who desperately wanted it, but missed it, will panic buy for almost any price, causing its value to rise massively

Phase 3: Scalpers Panic Phase

Those who were geniunely interested have got their copy by now. Price gets lower, sellers panic and try to get rid of their stock causing the supply side to rise and that leads to further price reductions until it hits more or less RRP (+ebay fee+shipping at best)..

Phase 4: At cost Phase

Continues until most of the scalpers stock is allocated to genuine collectors

Phase 5: Price increase Phase

no one is selling, but more and more ppl start looking for it..now when there are suddenly 10 desperately looking for it, but only 1 seller selling, the value of the steel will take a huge leap upward.. 9 left another seller, another huge leap but smaller than the previous.. etc etc until it reaches its peak

-> Buy in phase 1 & 4 sell in 2 & 5
