It does happen I used to be a manager of a Second Hand Music/Video Store
I caught for Sony and Warner before warehouse staff stealing stock from the film distributor warehouse they foolishly brought them to the shop to exchange for cash weeks before release date and I found out they being doing this for a long time but previous management of the store did not spot it.

If it's popular release you be surprised as to amount of film distributors having theft issues

Why can't they just disregard the stolen ones and reprint the same numbers so the loyal collector is not messed around?

Anything else turning up on the secondary market would be surplus regardless of the number.

So, does that mean the print run is increased by 53 then? 53 steelbooks reprinted, 53 hardbacks, 53 Slipcovers etc....or would they have had any spares left over?

To catch the persons who stole the goods they would need to be new numbers so when the stolen goods show up in second hand shops and ebay etc they can be traced to the source who sold them

Since its the Hardbox it's actually 106 steelbooks

Dear collectors,

not only good news we have for you, but this is life.

During assembling and preparing orders, we have found that we are missing 53 copies of hardbox Dredd. Missing numbers:

319, 330, 359, 361, 363, 364, 365, 366, 367, 371, 372, 373, 374, 375, 376, 377, 378, 379, 510, 528, 534, 537, 541, 547, 552, 554, 557, 558, 559, 563, 570, 573, 576, 581, 588, 589, 591, 595, 604, 606, 616, 620, 623, 626, 636, 637, 659, 660, 663, 674, 675, 676, 699

At Christmas in our warehouse was a lot of traffic, however, we reliably know that the copies were assembled and waiting for to be packed at the specified place from which they were stolen. The event was reported to the police and the insurance company, including providing evidence, but we are now solving the consequences and copies that need to be dispatched to customers. These customers will be getting copies from our reserves, which we keep for emergencies. These copies will have different numbers from those that have been lost.

We wanted you to know about this situation, because we have nothing to hide. Yesterday we informed all concerned customers about situation and how we are going to solve it.

Similar situation has not have happened to us for 7 years of our existence.

Thank you for your understanding and for those who are concerned, we apologize for the inconvenience.
