Looks great, i never saw this at the cinema but am looking forward to this ;)

Was this in 3D at the cinemas?

Nope. Like Oblivion, Skyfall or The Dark Knight Rises, Blomkamp avoided 3D for this one. I feel that sci-fi is a genre that inherently shouldn't be 3D unless it's 'adventure'. Saying that, I'd prefer Star Wars sequels not to be in 3D, and Elysium wouldn't have hurt with the 3D considering there were repeated moments of slow-motion, and anyone who has watched Dredd knows that kind of thing is begging for 3D application.

This year, both Abrams and del Toro have shown that post-conversion really can work - those two films are the best 3D I've seen since TRON: Legacy...so that's been what? Two and a half years?

Interesting. I feel that Sci-fi is the genre for 3D and that every Sci-fi film should be 3D. Exhibit A is Avatar. Tron Legacy's 3D was OK but certainly nowhere near Avatar, Prometheus, or some others.

Still want to get this SB, though. District 9 was great and I haven't seen this yet, so its a no-brainer pre-order for me.

In terms of directors attempting to make 'traditional' sci-fi with a modern edge, I understand they wouldn't want to go 3D...Avatar in my opinion was awfully scripted, and Prometheus was disappointing. TRON: Legacy had great 3D because the aesthetic for Tron was begging for 3D application, especially considering there was a lot of use of dark and light (3D image is dimmer, black is its friend). I was more engaged in TRON: Legacy than I was the 20 minutes of preview footage of Avatar I saw in 3D (I knew by then I'd hate it...Cameron has gone downhill since the days of Aliens and Terminator). Prometheus looked incredible, but I wasn't sure that 3D was needed at all. Maybe for a couple of scenes (the search drone things, the creator's ship hologram etc), but certainly not throughout. I've watched it in 2D blu-ray since and it still looks just as good.

Saw this a couple of nights ago, very dissapointing.
The story has plot holes you could drive a tank through and its yet another movie to suffer from the curse of 'shaky camera syndrome' though thankfully only in selected scenes.
I liked the overall production design though, the hardware was very impressive and you could believe that this was set in the same universe as District 9.
Thought Jodie Foster played her French character well but Matt Damon was very average, not a patch on his 'Behind the Candleabra' work.
Not sure about this steel though given my feelings about the movie, if it has interesting extras then I may go for the Amaray or just skip this altogether.

Never really liked the look of this but given the reviews its been getting ill be slapping down a PO with Amazon when their link goes live :)

Can't see 3D adding much to Moon or Robot and Frank. Some films will naturally suit 3D better than others but not entire genres.

Edit: personally, 3D doesn't add much to any film, though I think the above is an objective comment.

All sites are showing this as "Sold Out" or "Sign Up To be Notified", despite being previously available to pre-order on all sites (I personally ordered mine from Amazon.co.uk). My guess is that they are only allowed to open pre-orders whilst the film is active in the cinema, and then have to be closed until closer to the release date. Same thing happened for Monsters University

The release date is also different on some sites. Zavvi have it as the 1st of December 2022, whereas Amazon and Sainsbury's have it as the 26th Dec 2013. Which is correct?

I'm guessing that it has been put back until early next year. No doubt Blu-Ray will be obsolete by the time Zavvi ship it ;)

The release date is December 26th if Amazon and Sainsbury's are to be believed, it is a little strange as the 23rd would make more sense. The Zavvi date is obviously a placeholder or just an error. I haven't seen it available for pre-order at any of the sites though, you must be thinking of another title

As for Monsters University, I think they took it down whilst the artwork and other details were finalised.
