Then it's the same issue with the replacements they still have faint scratches under the matte surface that show up at a angle when artificial light or a camera photo taken

Some customers got different issues with paint chips and other surface scratches but these where different to the main issue lot's of faint scratches on the back that show up under artificial light but at first look look as if the steelbook is in mint condition

It was then a production issue when the matte paint was applied

I have seen it on a few different steelbooks, mainly gloss ones though.

Just received my replacement direct from Eureka and unfortunately this is just as bad as the original. A small dent on the front and loads of scratches on the back. I think I am done for good with steelbook collecting.

I think that is why a lot of collectors are afraid of opening their steelbooks! A sealed mint is not really a sealed mint. I sometimes value an open mint more than a sealed mint in a way, at least you know its mint. Good luck trying to find an opened mint Blufan steels. I have about 10 opened and they all have some form of imperfections.

So what are Zavvi and Eureka do with their returned copies? They can easily sell them to collectors after a copy.

It's very much like Schrödinger's Cat. Until it is opened, a steelbook is simultaneously both mint and damaged.

This actually showed up in my mailbox today. I live in the Midwest US. Looks good from the outside. Even though there are problems with the finish, I can't image an open/mint copy would fetch more than a sealed copy. I may open it in a couple of days since there have been so many issues. I'm not likely to get a replacement if I wait until I get around to watching it. I probably have lots of unopened steels with imperfections. This one does NOT (edit) have such a nice finish that I am likely to be emotionally crushed by imperfections.

I received my Eureka replacement steelbook and to my surprise there were two disc inside plus the booklet, really wasn't expecting that since I've read they are only shipping the steelbook without the discs. This one was in pretty good shape, no scratches on the back maybe one small scratch on the front but you can barely see it. All in all I'm pretty satisfied.

I would be scared to ever sell one of these sealed on Ebay. No matter what kind of disclaimers or "rules" a seller puts on a listing, if the buyer gets a steelbook, opens it, sees a scratch on it, then initiates a return because it's "damaged", the buyer is getting their money back.

"The Case of the Scratched Steelbooks"
. . . and as Sherlock Holmes said in "The Sign of Four" (and probably elsewhere) "Once you've eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth".

So who caused the scratches?

- THE IMPOSSIBLE: some will say it happened during the manufacturing process at the Scanavo plant or at Eureka HQ . . . I personally wouldn't go along with that view.

- THE IMPROBABLE: some will say it happened somewhere between the manufacturing and retail stages and would point the finger squarely at the Sony DADC plant or to put it another way they would say that the scratches were not made at Eureka or at Scanavo but at Sony DADC (and it should be remembered, based on their reply to my recent email, that Scanavo had no knowledge of any issues regarding this steelbook at the time).
Why Sony DADC?: Sony DADC is responsible for the replication and printing work for many of the small independent labels such as Arrow, Eureka, BFI or Criterion UK so I feel on balance of probability that the scratches occurred post manufacturing just prior to affixing j-cards and factory seals at one of the Sony DADC plants.
. . . and I remember reading that individual labels don't physically pack their discs and booklets in the cases themselves or affix the j-cards so I feel confident that the scratched backs won't have been caused by anyone who works directly for Eureka unless they took each steel out of its factory seal, played a few games of Curling with them and the re-sealed them (No, I don't think so).

That being said the customer's contract is with Zavvi so Zavvi is liable for replacements / refunds . . . it's been good to read that Eureka have been obliging enough to help customers directly by sending out replacements - something that they are not obliged to do - credit to them
