The matte finish is not the problem, I habe many very nice looking matte steelbooks.

Warner Uk can not make good shiny metallic effekts. And why they use so poor, low resolution material for the back and this stupid "negativ" metallic effeckt ?

This looks very cheap.

Matte finishes are the problem. If you look at the custom glossing thread, I have yet to see a glossed steel that doesn't look better and more vivid than the original matte.

When the matte finish is poor, than a gloss helps, that the steels looks not so cheap(then the finish/lack is not so thin).

But when you have a very good matte finish with vivid colors and shiny mettaic effects(like the Fox Germany Special Edition DVD Steelbooks) you dont need a glossy finish.

Then is a glossy finish only a thing of personal preferences.

The German Die Hard 2 DVD steelbook have one of the best shiny metallic effekts I ever see, the red glows in my eyes.:notworthy:

The problem with a glossy finish is, that you have often scratches, hairines and dust particles in the lack. Sadly, they dont work in the production very clean.

I won't say that gloss is the only way to go but when you have a simple designs like this, sixth sense, or zavvi wreck it ralph then not having gloss is almost criminal and it will look like a mediocre release. Also gloss steelbooks should not be avoided for fear of factory defects, there have been too many successful releases for gloss steelbooks.

Sure, but for some people is a gloss finish the only way to produce a nice steelbook.

And that is not correct. Further, when a steelbook looks not good, mostly it have a other reason than not a glossy finish.

Look at the ugly german Saving private Ryan steelbook(new 1 disc release).
The gloss helps nothing.

You can not see the face of the charakters in the background, the colors and the contrast are so bad.

And gloss or matte is not all.

For example a satin finish steelbook or a matte finish steelbook with gloss highlights could look very nice.

Matte varnish with a spot gloss can look good too. Look at blufans godfather and Germany's the rock. Superb finish on the front and rear on that one.

This one seems ok to me, nothing so special indeed... they did a decent simple work on embossings, the result it's a bit minimalistic but good. I agree about the spot glosses, often i like them much more than a plain full gloss, in hands.
Anyway "ugly" series or not i'm going to complete this one and maybe then i'll try with some custom spot gloss on the embossed images

And thanks for the beautiful pics ricster
