Here's one for you guys..... sitting here recently I and looking at the money some of these steelbooks fetch I was wondering, do I really need all of these steelbooks? I could sell the majority of mine, replace them all with amaray versions and still have money left over.

With HMV and Play going, it looks like the UK market won't be getting as many steelbooks as we were once promised and the import prices from over the world is getting more and more expensive.

I'm very tempted to just sell 90% of mine keeping my Avengers collection, the ones my fiancé has bought me and any I've won in competitions, and selling the rest. Or do I just stop buying steelbooks and keep my collection as is and just buy the regular amarays?

I wont say too much as ultimately regardless of what is said on here this will come down to being a personal decision and choice. I personally did a similar thing last year and sold more then half my collection (around 70% of it) and started buying VERY selectively thereafter. And Im happy with that decision and the hobby is actually a lot more fun for me now.

Certainly things like cost can be a big influence on how you decide to move forward and absolutely a valid factor to consider for most people.

For myself I think the big variables that made me change my collecting/buying habits were (1) too many re-releases and the hobby losing its "collectable" appeal, (2) cost $$$ and (3) just the overwhelmingness (is this a word, lol?) of how large my collection had gotten in such a short period of time and trying to think how massive it would get in the future if I kept at it.

Thats my 2 cents.

I did the same thing, however, after a while I had sold all my grails and I just couldn't keep going. It's all a personal choice, once you start selling you'll probably think twice about your collecting. ;)

Exactly. Its hard to make that initial decision to sell but once product starts to move off the shelves, lol, you feel fine.

Steel collecting has been fun but I think it is time for me to move on. There are just too many steels being released; buying and storing them has become a chore for me.

I will sell about 50% of my collection as a start and then consider what to do next. I will continue to do what I enjoy (and only as long as I enjoy it) - looking for and acquiring rare steels. I may even *gasp* open some steels and watch the movies.

QUICK FM has a high temperature! ;)

Cooey - These days I ONLY keep my FAV films, which means i've gone from rows and rows of steels to just a couple of rows ;)

Thanks for the posts guys, it's interesting hearing your views, still unsure what to do as my steelie collection isn't particularly massive....... another thing which would be a pain in the ass is if I do decide to sell would be packing them up as I haven't got much in the way of boxes/packaging now. I used to keep them all but they took up too much room so I decided to throw them out.

What I would do if I were you would to at least slow down. Only buy the ones that make you feel good.

I see people panic selling. The economy is turning around. I expect a huge bump in prices over the coming year. Blu-ray is here to stay as far as physical media is concerned. I think people are nervous thinking the next format is coming. Its on media servers. You cant make a steelbook for those.

Anyway. If you want to sell out I will buy the majority.

I'm ready to sell up too.

And it's mainly because I'm thinking of moving out of my parents home and not only would that mean more living costs it would also mean a lot less space. :(

Hello Cooey mate!

I've joined HDN after posting on AVF that I've given up entirely! I have lost all love for this game for numerous reasons:

the cost
having to buy multiples to trade
the amount on the market (ok the cost but also the rareness of steels has gone)
Having to buy films I dont even like

So I have decided to completely cull my collection and put the money into something useful...namely a new PC and some stuff for the kids

Yeah I saw your thread over there mate :)

Well I've decided they're going. I've offered them up to my close friends first, but I'll post a list here tonight.

I'm another who's getting rid of at least 75% of what I have. And that's a lot.

Too many releases, too much money, too much storage space. If you're not careful these things end up owning YOU rather than you owning them.

My advice is to apply very strict criteria to buying any new titles and stick to them. A small collection of great titles is far more satisfying than a huge, sprawling one that has no limits.

same reason i stopped collection, sat there looking at all the money collecting dust on the shelves and it hit me that its just a waste so i quit. I only get the odd title for my personal collection now. Like stated before once you shift your rare titles it becomes easier.:D

I find it very therapeutic to collect something and at the moment steelbooks is that thing for me. The problem for me was when I started collecting I swept up every steelbook I could find and now have a lot I don't want and could do without.

I now only buy the new releases I want/like the artwork on, have stopped buying the cheap German releases which I found started to offend me in their mediocrity, and have concentrated my buying on any old releases that are particularly attractive to me (not necessarily the grails).

I like collecting, that's my problem. :D

I've often thought the same thing, but I've carried on. What I have done though is be more selective with what I preorder and how much I pay for certain titles. I open and watch all of my Steelbooks, so for me it's about having films I enjoy as much as it is about collecting.

interesting post this

i have about 140 or thereabouts but usually only buy UK steelbooks. With HMV and Play going i was actually considering calling time and maybe selling most of mine. Worried i would regret it though.

It tends to be the ones keeping them sealed and storing them on shelves that give up on buying them. I open and watch all mine and aren't even contemplating selling - although I don't have many.

I consider myself a relativly new collector as i only started in May last year, its funny because when you first start a new hobby you generally tend to buy anything and everything that is available and continually want more ( well this was the case for me ).

Looking through my collection this weekend made me realise that some of the steelbooks i own i don,t really need or want, they are there for the novelty value and wouldn,t even consider buying them now. As time has progressed as a collector and with the onset of no more play.com and hmv and the uk steelbook market slowing down i made a decision to sell the steels in my collection that i don,t need ( 12 in total ) and concentrate on buying and sourcing steelbooks that i really do want to add to my collection. There are quite a few but are older titles, But i agree that sometimes this hobby is like a whirlwind sometimes and can get a little out of hand. This is just from my own personnal experience guys...but i am here to stay and hope to trade and buy with most of you in the near future....................:) p.s my wants are going to cost me ( sorry girlfriend ) a fortune!!!!
