Here's one for you guys..... sitting here recently I and looking at the money some of these steelbooks fetch I was wondering, do I really need all of these steelbooks? I could sell the majority of mine, replace them all with amaray versions and still have money left over.

With HMV and Play going, it looks like the UK market won't be getting as many steelbooks as we were once promised and the import prices from over the world is getting more and more expensive.

I'm very tempted to just sell 90% of mine keeping my Avengers collection, the ones my fiancé has bought me and any I've won in competitions, and selling the rest. Or do I just stop buying steelbooks and keep my collection as is and just buy the regular amarays?

I don't think now is a good time to sell.

With play/hmv/fs etc all having clear out sales, prices are pretty low right now.

Also for rare titles its a bad time of year I think, just after X-mas most people are still reeling from spending on gifts, trying to pay back their CC's.

If you can wait until the last half of the year (Oct/Nov/Dec) that should be the best time to sell, imo, from my ebay selling experience anyways.

True ... blu-ray isnt going anywhere no time soon. People get overwhelmed by the sheer # of releases in steel and then think its time to quit cause they cant keep up ... its more like, calm down take your time ... buy smarter and be selective. Many times I trade a title or sell a title and can turn right around and buy 3 new etc. Just be smart.

The more steels means more the brand is in the limelight and thus more collectors come. Steels are not in the mainstream in USA yet ... wait till that happens this year with more waves (which are coming!) and we will get a huge influx of new collectors ... and then supply and demand ... more people coming in playing catch up and getting in the game .... People's collections will rise in value ... when that happens it opens up more opportunity.

Exactly it comes down to being aware of what you buy and more important why you are buying it.

The only thing that concerns me about that statement above is again how this is executed. Is it just going to be a re-hash of old steels with the same art and no interior, and even if it is a fresh wave are these steels that are already in steelbook format but now just in the US. I think that is the cause of angst amongst the collectors. But we shall see

ah, after reading so many comments here, I went to Amazon Uk and I was gonna cancel my pre-order of all the oldies, er, I meant Classic films wave (Casablanca, Straeetcar, Ben-Hur, etc)...but it was already shipped! oh well, maybe next few months for the slow down!

why some of those classics are nice

is their a thread for steel valuations so i can get an idea on price that I can access without 30 posts?

There's a steelbook value thread in the Trading section but you need 30 posts to access it. Just keep contributing to the discussions and you will soon be there!;)

Yeah but its pretty hard to get into a discussion on a 10 post per day limit. Will this rise once I hit 30 posts as well or is this a perm thing??

Nope just until you get your 30 posts and then no posting limits. Just dont spam your way for the last 9 posts, lol, and your good!

Nah...I hate spammers. I have to delete enough of them on VGForums

Good to hear. The most annoying thing is new members spamming there way to 30 posts so they can get into the buy/sell forum with threads bumped with useless posts.

I tell you what tho... you ODB are aces in my book for a new member. Doing it the right way to 30 posts. More then what can be said for a lot of members that spam to 30 and then contribute nothing to the forum after they gain access to the trading section.

Im not sure where your from but if you ever need help with Canadian steels you hit me a PM. Im glad to help good contributing HDN members.

The UK, currently in Scotland I think. ODB is a good guy , I've known him for quite a while on a couple of other forums.

Anyway back on topic, I'm another who just gets the SBs of films I want to watch. For me it's the film first then the steelbook. As I open all my SBs and watch the films then releases like the Asian steelbooks rarely interest me as as soon I open then they become exactly the same as the other identical SB releases.

I am guilty of double dipping for better artwork and having several releases of my favourites - the obvious ones being Battle Royale (the SB and the lLmited Edition) and Watchmen (FS SB, Play SB and Ultimate versions) :emb:

I have been considering the views expressed on this thread. I agree with chipvideo and stevo. I am going to continue collecting. But I will just focus on acquiring steels that are more limited (ie rare). It is impossible for me to acquire all steels anymore as too many are being issued. I will sell off all the non rare stuff or keep them with my amarays.

I was considering starting a new thread for my topic but this one will do.

Now I am not talking Value/Cost of the OOS steelbooks, but this new warner wave actually kind of upsets me. I've stated before that I don't collect for the money side of it and a majority of my purchases have been at retail price and I still hold to that but I am getting peeved.

Warner are now releasing movies for a 3rd time in steelbook format. While we don't know the art yet but either way it is not good. If it is new art it just feels like they are trying to milk collectors, if it is re-hash of old art (even if it is less quality steel than the originals or no inside art) then it feels like there is no exclusivity to me any longer. Watchmen is getting a re-release so it will likely be one of the previous art works as will Suckerpunch and a few others

I mean at least fox is only releasing movies that were not previously in a steelbook format, that I can understand even if they are releasing a bunch of waves.

I go to the store day 1 hour 1 to buy my exclusive steelbook, feel happy about getting it and the fact that that puts me in a "club" with only a limited number of people who can also obtain this item, only to find out Warner decides to mass produce them a few months later. It takes the entire joy out of the hobby for me.

I get that collecting steelbooks is getting more popular so you have more people interested who want to collect older titles but getting a steelbook is supposed to be a limited purchase and it should stay that way.

Finally I understand if they use another countries art then they can hide behind the well the other release was exclusive to the store/country you bought it, but I wonder what happens if some of the art is the same as a previous release, I wonder if there is an actual case against them for misrepresentation.

I'm just fed up with seeing movies getting another SB treatment for no reason, it is hard enough at this point as a collector to keep up with the new releases

I have now started to grab the ones that I want and which might have good reselling or trading power. I also lost the desperation to grab something which I used to have before. I may even quit if I find a better job than can earn me more bucks.

I am bored of Studios releasing the same bunch of titles half a dozen of times by not doing anything extra with the contents. In fact collectors are shafted with dull matte finish, single disc and recycled encodes leaving us to opt out or look for a better release. It's pretty clear that both Studios and Scanovo taking full advantage of collectors.

Also selling / trading in the forums has become very hard despite listing OOP/OOS Steels at cost price or a few bucks above it. Won't be that long when you see me offloading a huge collection.

The main problem with trading on the forum is that most are trying to get the auction prices here.

1. There are no final value charges for selling to another member. So why value your steel at highest auction prices.
2. I have seen Argo (just an example) on trade threads listed for $40+. Still available at FS. Why would you trade with anyone that does this. Another has A team for 25 pounds.
3. Too many traders inflate values by adding what they paid to get the item shipped to them. Had too many say that.
4. OOP/OOS doesn't mean the item is as valuable.

IMO forum prices are not indicative of real world/ auction values. I go through many threads and say to myself I would never pay that.

sold bunch of my rare ones already..still have extras rarity that I need to pass on to the next collectors...quit since last year with Dark Knight Rises. there is no such things as rarity in this hobby. I haven't bought anything new ever since then other than pre-ordering blufans. before I get all excited with all the new releases. now, I don't even care LOL... it used to be fun in sharing rare steelbook pictures, but now, every momma and pappa owns them...I might as well just buy the amaray again.
