Here's one for you guys..... sitting here recently I and looking at the money some of these steelbooks fetch I was wondering, do I really need all of these steelbooks? I could sell the majority of mine, replace them all with amaray versions and still have money left over.

With HMV and Play going, it looks like the UK market won't be getting as many steelbooks as we were once promised and the import prices from over the world is getting more and more expensive.

I'm very tempted to just sell 90% of mine keeping my Avengers collection, the ones my fiancé has bought me and any I've won in competitions, and selling the rest. Or do I just stop buying steelbooks and keep my collection as is and just buy the regular amarays?

Hardly. This forum is a movie forum and it is for people who love movies. I see collectors come and go. It makes me feel like they don't care about the movie and are only collecting because of the case. I find that quite odd. I see a lot of burnouts around here. Don't you like to collect because its a great movie. I stopped buying the crap stuff a while ago, but I first and formost collect because I am a movie fanatic. I love movies.
I guess some are taking it all the wrong way. Oh well. And no I didn't attack all you. I am just stating this happens over and over on this board. People burnout.

Take a chill pill man.

Chip, my original comment today was not saying I am leaving and in fact I said outright I am not collecting for the money, only that it is frustrating to see a movie studio re-releaseing the same movie over and over for the 3rd or 4th time as a steelbook. I have nothing agianst different artwork at the time of release but this WB wave seems to have no reason. I want to be able to collect but if there is no fun in it (ie you lose the exclusivity by the studio saying hey we sold out lets just re-release it) then why even bother. You can still buy the regular editions for a fraction of the cost and be a movie fanatic, owning a steelbook or special edition is not the only way to it, it is just a fun way and lets you join a forum like this to discuss the various releases. But when it becomes work then where is the hobby :scat:

Thats why I posted, I was trying to see if other felt the same way.

keep it civil folks ... while some things in this thread may sadden me I wont come in and bash the thread .. but at the same time people dont need to make jabs and incite others ... it just blows up in all our faces ya know.

Back to the topic at hand ...

oh and if people arent happy with the WB wave announcement choices then make a thread specifically for it ... hopefully you can get it some buzz .. then I'll pass it on.

Thats a great response. I know many people are frustrated about re releases, but there is absolutely nothing you and I can do. Its the studios decision and we have to respect that. I just see so many people get obsessed with this collecting and then they burn out. Its sad to see that happen. I am passionate about my movies. I love them. If I didn't love movies I wouldn't but them in any form.

If its hard for you then only collect what makes you feel good. I didn't mean any hard feelings to you. Sorry if I did.

maybe it might be worth a thread to see how some people feel

Thats why I made the post in the first place, I really wanted to see if I was alone here or was off base. Like Wreck said if there is enough backlash it may not eliminate re-release but maybe could curb them. I ultimately want this to be a fun hobby, else like I said I can just buy the regular amray. And like you as a movie person I want every movie so it does become hard, especially when you see the different countries releases and are like ooh thats nice I want this one and that one.

No hard feelings. Though if I could play mediator for a minute, I really would hate to see this forum degenrate as other places do and really did not want my original post to cause conflict. Maybe you and Jason could hug it out

Back to the topic at hand ...

New guy posting, don't hate me for seeing me post so much. :D

Anyways, was reading the OP post and I have been thinking about if I really need to buy all these Steelbooks. I definitely first set rules to only buy blu-rays from 14.99 and under and after I learned about the Steelbook world, well...that kind of defeated my original rules. (I also have other hobbies to budget money for haha)

But I think after thinking it through, I plan on only buying Steelbooks that are Region A or Free, have artwork (inside and out), and are well reviewed. Who really wants to buy Sucker Punch? :p I think with most of those rules it eliminates me from spending all that money across the globe and actually enjoy the Steelbooks I buy so I don't feel as bad.

Welcome to the forum bud. Enjoy the show :movie: :hilarious:

I hope you stick to your decision. It's easy to stray and hard to stop. I'm speaking from experience. Boot camp saved me :p

I think if you just buy the ones that you will actually watch that could be a good way to do it. I mean what happens if you end up with a huge room full of **** you dont even like? :hilarious:

I recently started collecting steels, so I ain't no where near quitting. Also, I'm not really as crazy as some of y'all haha, like buying several of the same steel, not opening them etc.
I only buy the steels I really want, and I buy them so I have a certain movie I like in a special edition and so it looks beautiful on the shelve.

sold bunch of my rare ones already..still have extras rarity that I need to pass on to the next collectors...quit since last year with Dark Knight Rises. there is no such things as rarity in this hobby. I haven't bought anything new ever since then other than pre-ordering blufans. before I get all excited with all the new releases. now, I don't even care LOL... it used to be fun in sharing rare steelbook pictures, but now, every momma and pappa owns them...I might as well just buy the amaray again.

According to a previous post of yours ..

i just cancelled 2x from Santana Row, CA...good luck It was my safety net just in case the main shop was sold out on day 1 LOL.

You imply you picked up ZDT at your local store ... so your last wasnt TDKR.

If you're an investor, get out. Like any investment the value of the investment can go down as well as up.

If you're a collector, definitely keep going. Some classic movies are getting the steelbook treatment as well as some big name franchises coming out this year. I can't wait!

I agree Domalorite. If your looking to invest then Asian steels and the few true exclusives (Roger Rabbit, Ent. Store Jack Reacher, ZDT) will rise. The rest are too hit and miss. Even Korea are starting to slide with some steels lacking in slips.

I'll keep going as I now only get steels from movies I love as opposed to going steel crazy in the early days ;)

I'm just peeved about the whole steelbook thing at the moment to be honest. Quality control being the main thing here and I'm surprised there isn't more of an upheaval about it as I see on many threads the issue cropping up time and time again. Too many spine slashes, which seem to be increasing as time passes. To many paint chips and scratches (see End of Watch UK thread and also War of the Worlds UK thread for 2 big examples - I had to exchange 4 times to get a copy in acceptable condition, and I'm not talking mint here either).

Too many re-issues is becoming a big problem too. Not everyone collects for the sake of resale value but when a product is sold as limited and exclusive it should stay that way. Trust is being broken here and while it may welcome new collectors, it will also mean some people will stop collecting, or buy less. Warner seem to be the worst in regards to this.

Personally, I'm sick of every pre-order I have being a big gamble as to whether I'll get a non-damaged copy. In the past I've ordered 2-3 of some steels just in case but I just cannot afford to do it all the time, and why should I? Retailers should not be over selling, there should be a small handful of copies put aside for missing/damaged orders. I ordered 4 copies of Lawless (1 for me, 1 for my buddy in the US and 2 spare in case of damages). Guess what, all 4 came with some kind of fault. Thankfully 2 of them were what I'd call ''acceptable'' with only minor chips but the other 2 were scratched badly across the front. Sent the other 2 back but what if I didn't order as many and the 2 I got were the scratched ones? Play wouldn't have been able to replace them...

Personally for me, I collect for the premium art/packaging. I don't buy steelbooks exclusively either, I buy digibooks, boxsets, amarays with slipcovers. Basically what I feel is the best release in regards to disc content and packaging.

I think at the moment I just feel letdown. The only thing keeping my hopes up is Zavvi stepping up and seem to be wanting to release some nice exclusives with proper treatment. Then again, I suppose their hands are tied by Scanavo and the studios, to a certain degree.

I'm still collecting, just being extremely selective.

Going off topic slightly here... I also buy and play vinyl and even that is annoying me at the moment. Again, the quality control lacking where I'm receiving too many LP's with scratches, warps, etc. I just think quality in general is really slipping lately with most tangible things.

Wreck,

I got 2 copies already for favors and shipped them out for members. Ninja members asked for my help and I did. I even offer to friends if they need my help, then I would be more than happy to get them USA releases without any fees.

You can ask members Fork and DJHilalo if you want proof that I got them their copy and shipped them out.

Anyhow...it doesn't matter if you believe me or not. Several members who know that I'm going to buy blufans releases going forward only. Who knows, maybe I'll start buying 1 or 2 more steelbook down the road in a change of heart. But as of today, I have no pre-order of a steelbook other than blufan. Zavvi has some nice upcoming titles and I have nothing on order with them. You can verified with them too. I created an account last year with them, but never ordered anything from them.

If you still doubt that I pretty much stop this hobby, then I'm sorry that I can't say or show you to believe me. It's all good man...it doesn't matter.

I'm not sure why I even posted about it. Stupid me...I think i was bored. LOL.

PS. I just PM you the shipping receipt.

Cheers man, saved me typing all that out!

Ive always bought films i wanted to watch and on occasion bought a film i may be interested in because it was in a steel but not any more. Im getting out and only purchasing films i really really want in my collection so i cancelled The Hobbit, Man with the Iron Fist, Finding Nemo etc etc and im just keeping Django Unchained and Life of Pi on pre order (also the Start Trek one actually as my German one is a state), problem is i only ordered one copy (as i always have) and expect the quality control will be crap and my ocd will go into overdrive. The quality control is the main reason im getting out. If you dont open any youll no doubt be unaware of all the potential issues lurking under the data sheet but i dont, i open them all and instead of enjoying the artwork, the first thing i do is check it over with a fine toothcomb to see whats wrong with it

Im selling my play.com Iron Man 1 + 2 so at least when the inevitable third one comes out i wont have to buy 3 copies to ensure one is mint, i wont have to start trades to get a mint version, i will simply watch it at the cinema and buy the Avengers phase 2 collection and feel a lot better!

Im fully expecting Django and Life of Pi to be terrible quality and depending on what issues they have will determine my next step. I order from Amazon where theyre both sold out so i may just return or try elsewhere, but the constant returns and re-ordering is such a chore. If there are issues maybe ill give up altogether and not purchase any at all going forward :squint:

Me too, i started collecting every Steelbook i could get in Hand ,even the high Price ones.:D
But one Day i asked myself -do you teally want them? Are they worth the Price?
My Answer was -NO:thumbs:I am going to sell then one by one-except my Trade on Argo-this will be a Birthday Present for my Girlfriend:drool:
Then Media Markt started their lenticular Steels:thumbs:-and since that Day i found my personal Grails- a few Hours ago i trade Roger Rabbit for Looper FS-and, i`m glad i did it:oohyeah:

quality rather than quantity-that`s my Opinion :D

I think these 3D releases with lenticulars are the ones I am gonna really concentrate on now. They are stunning to say the least. I also don't see them getting reprints as I bet they are not cheap.

I am also not 3D ready yet and when I do make the switch I want to make sure the steels I have are 3D versions so I don't have to double dip.

Of course I will keep on buying other steels too. Just much more selective on what I buy. Has to be a decent movie of my liking or I am not going to buy it.
