First and foremost- It's not necessarily the design that most people are up in arms about, it's the awful, awful execution of the idea.
It's not the same Walkman- No Sony logo (granted, copyright issues...) But it's not even the right colour!! Then on the spine, there's a 'skip' button- Since when did a Walkman ever have a skip button??
Total lacklustre approach to the design.
Also; for now at least, this is the only artwork people around the World have the option on. Maybe down the line there's going to be alternate steelbooks, but not for the time being...
also you aware its not a vcr but a take deck for music, they had play / stop / fast forward and fast rewind....

yea looks good and has all the correct button,s play / stop / rewind / forward / so why dont you like the lay out on the steelbook

Marvels design doesn't have fast forward and rewind buttons, they have instead used the modern signs for skip back/forward which were NEVER on walkmans!

If people are angry that Spiderman 2 can now be had for $10 dollars, just waiting to see the anger when this does the same! lol

Because it's the wrong Walkman used from the one in the film for a start off...
And secondly, Walkmans don't have a 'skip song' button like CD players/MP3 players do- it's analogue technology. I know there was a feature where if you held down the f/f button the tape would automatically find the next song (given that there was a long enough time gap between songs on the tape)
I thought that the steelbook design used was a generic design so Marvel/Disney didn't get into any legality issues with Sony (or have to pay any royalty fees for the use of the image) over the similarities between the steelbooks and one of its products but seeing the post a page back where this exact design was in fact an actual line of Walkman that Sony brought out blows that one out the water.
Someone put it better than I could on another thread when they said something along the lines of 'what if they brought a Star Trek steelbook out but used the Millenium Falcon as a cover image?' Sure it's still a spaceship, but it's not the right one & that's almost like what they've done with this steelbook. Why use an image iconic to the film like Peter Quills Walkman if your just going to totally screw it up and use the wrong model altogether? Did they think nobody would notice or was it just a big joke, with them knowing it would sell out anyway??

Not one single CASSETTE player had a skip button. You can't skip a track on tape. You can on a CD player!.

It makes you wonder if the designer had even hit puberty. (to be so ignorant of the history of the Sony Walkman!)It's unreal!

I'm hoping they will at least tweak the buttons on the spine.

Glad that it's not an issue to you or anything along those lines, but when a premium collectors edition like this pops up, surely you'd think the creators would take more care in the design process- this is the epitome of unprofessionalism...

It was never an issue to me, i'm personally just not that fussed about it, people and companies make mistakes all the time. But to each there own.

Someone is going to need to design a new spine, so that it can be printed onto sticky back paper, and then applied over the top of the old spine.

Any volunteers?

Tape players never had a skip button they had fast forward/rewind.

The spine could be reading from bottom to top. If thats the case then the play button would be the correct way? No?
Think about it as an exercise in user interface design. The arrow in the front indicates the reel-to-reel direction the tape is moving when the tape is being played.

It would be incredibly confusing if the Play-button on the side of a real-life Walkman would indicate the opposite direction.

Sony wouldn't have committed such a blunder. But apparently the steelbook designer didn't know what she/he was doing...
