The reason manufacturers have stopped producing 3D televisions is nothing to do with people not wanting them, it's more to do with the fact that to use them you have to buy 3D content, which via blu ray disc will set you back around £25 a time. TV networks aren't showing any 3D content (which the industry expected them to by now) so unless you rely on 'only' watching the actual 3D blu rays you own, the likelihood is that the average family will watch 90% of their viewing in 2D.

In comparison networks, Youtube, Netflix, Amazon etc are providing more and more 4k content as time goes by - and as naturally happens once a higher resolution is achieved, and most 4K TVs and modern blu ray players upscale the image to 4K. So there's just move value in it for a lot of people when you consider how much actual time you'll use either function.

Truth is however that 3D is a far more immersive experience, you feel much more 'present' in the action and moment. The clarity of the picture from 4K to HD really doesn't matter when you're watching it in 3D, so that argument is a little redundant. You don't get a 4K crisp pixel perfect image when you watch it on a 200 foot screen at the cinema for example, that's not the point, it's about immersion.

People watching in 2D the second time around watching it could be more to do with folks having friends over and showing them the movie, and simply not having enough pairs of 3D glasses around the house for EVERYONE to watch it in 3D. I know for me, when I first get a new movie, i disappear into my home theatre room and watch it on my own, in 3d and the subwoofer cranked to get that real cinema experience. Then a coupla weeks later when friends are over i'll be like 'oh you gotta see this movie, it's amazing' and then we'll all watch it together, except this time in 2D as I only have two pairs of 3D glasses.

Jeez this forum has lately just become a battleground between people arguing over whether 4K or 3D is better. What's the point? Both have their pros and cons, and at some point 4K 3D will become the standard making the whole argument redundant. Simple fact is the studios should be doing exactly what Spiderman Homecoming and Disney (in the states) do and that's providing all the formats within the package so that consumers have the CHOICE rather than attacking each other because they're desperately trying to claw onto whichever is their favourite. For the price we pay currently (the last few months has seen a steep rise from £16.99 or so to upward of £24 per steel) we damn well SHOULD get all formats for that price. If anything ditch the damned ultra violet download disc, when was the last time most people used THAT.

Sony has done just that a little while back with Ghostbusters 2016 Amaray and Passengers Amaray, both got 4K + 3D + Blu-ray, I'm all for 3D(true about what you say it's a totally different experience...) but I think it's smart to offer all options at once.

If you don't have a 4K TV
Best way to watch films is in 2D :D:p and not 3D

3D is ok on some films but is inferior in terms of image quality to 2D or 4K
Most repeat viewings of films in the home is watched in 2D that says a lot in regards to viewing in 3D

3D viewing of films in homes needs to be without the need for 3D glasses to have a long term future

"If you don't have a 4k tv (which i do). Best way to watch film's is in 2d (smiles all round) and not 3d". ???? Have you read what you just said Paul !? I don't watch all films all the time in 3d, but i do when i want to add that extra layer of immersive quality to my viewing experience. In fact i watch most of the time in 2d (either standard or 4k), but when i really want to see the magic, i spend the time reflecting upon the beauty and depth of 3d. Truth is; we should not have to choose between buying a 3d "OR" 4k disc to get the full viewing potential of our choices based upon how we feel at the time, it gets expensive buying both ! Even when the company's decide to release them both together (as Sony has done), it is still either one or the other, and not the logical marriage of them both ! I personally buy 3d releases and drop a 4k disc in the steelbook (this raises questions as to how successful 4k really is), just so i can watch in standard (albeit 4k) format when i just fancy a quick watch. Avatar is a film for instance that really looks so much better in 3d.

You just backed up all the industry feedback those that purchase 3D Blu-ray watch mostly in 2D instead with repeat viewings compared to watching in 3D

3D viewing is been developed to be without the need for 3D Glasses and starts with Avatar 2 in 2020 in the cinema with new laser projector system which James Cameron company is involved in its development
James Cameron has said himself 3D viewing in homes has to move towards 3D without the need for 3D Glasses to survive long term

The future of 3D as home entertainment will be 3D without the need for the 3D Glasses and is in development

Using the 3D glasses yes give you the 3D effect but with a lot of users causes eye strain and other side effects and depends on the film some have good 3D and some is waste of time and better to watch in 2D

Have mentioned about the future of 3d on many occasions (yes i do know where its going and even the names for it in the future, and its not just about the tech. A lot of the film industry doe's not understand 3d at the moment). Many have had problems with 3d at home due to the fact there are 2 different systems in place, passive & active; one in particular has caused alot of headaches with eyestrain due to long viewings. A 3d encoding today quite possibly will be fine to replay on future glassless tv's !? Why not hit the ground running !? Also 3d is not just about depth, a 3d special effect for instance, jumps out of the screen. Are we going to only have the option to view in 3d at the cinema ? As an avid home cinema viewer, i defend my ability to view in the best format i can or want (everyone being different and i respect your choice) in the home ! I collect steelbooks etc over pirate copies because i prefer the overall quality and experience, the same as going the cinema to increase my experience and support future releases ! People i know who have struggled with 3d (not seeing it, headaches etc), i have helped them to understand what they are looking at and how they are watching it with a view to getting the full experience; the amount of people having that euphoria moment as a result is a pleasure to behold, almost all loving their new 3d experience !

For me the problem with 3d is that there are too many movies that it offers very little for and I think that I could of just watched it in 2d.

I remember when they first came on to the market and i was watching the demo sets in the shops, the effects were great, things were projecting out of the screen as if they were right in your face. But watch a movie in 3d and you very rarely get that. Instead you get a bit of depth which most of the time is neither here or there.

Totally agree ! The real problem with 3d is not the tech, it's the studios ! Not many film makers actually understand 3d ! When they started selling 3d films without the eye popping special effects, they tried to re sell 3d as being "only" an increase in depth perception ? Then people asked what's the point in 3d ? Increase the resolution to compensate for loss of flimsy 3d film making and "hey presto", problem solved. Saturation of the 3d uptake never happened due to the above, lets try 4k (been in the pipeline as a backup/coverup for ages), and up the price aswell, saying its the Bee's Nee's !? The future (again) of film. Trouble is, most steelbook buyers want more, better art, more added value (double lenti's etc), and so on; dropping 3d means nothing to most consumers, but ninja's who want the best, demand the best ! 4k, 3d, double lenti, great artwork, limited "special" editions and anything else that inspires them, they want ! Drop 3d, give them 4k instead and maybe no one will notice ? Try dropping double lenti's and steelbooks or even blu rays full stop ! What we really need is that level of 3d that was shown with the demo clips ! Real 3d ! Am abit disappointed with 3d, watching the quality of 3d on new releases drop away from our expectations of the dimension ! Steelbooks, increasingly blufans add great value to their product, as i believe 3d does !

I remember watching journey to the centre of the Earth in 3d at the cinema, which could of been the first 3d movie? In fairness I wasn't overly impressed until a particular scene where a pirrana flies out of the screen. It was like it would hit me in the face lol. Brilliant.

Anyways, what is the 3d effects like GOTG 2?

This would have been the first steelbook for me . But that artwork is so lazy and ugly (n) i cancelled it directly when i saw it.
Hoping that the lenticular re-release have better artwork, like the previous Guardians of the Galaxy steelbook or get my hands on the blufans steelbook version!
But i'm just new here and i don't know how everything works just yet so fingers crossed :D

Totally agree - if I know a film was released at the cinema in 3D, then I want the 3D version for home (hence purchasing a couple of film abroad to get the 3D version in the steelbook). I always watch these films back in 3D, the only time the 2D disc is used, is when I lend it out!!!

That's one of the best 3D Blu Rays.

But there are a lot of hokey set ups in the film where stuff comes flying out at you. Which is the point of 3D really I suppose.......

The first guardians in 3D, is excellent with those imax scenes and when the movie breaks frame.

Transformers age of extinction was also fantastic in 3D due to imax.

Love the format and i will support it until they no longer release 3D blurays :)
