  • Hammer Films acquires Silver Salt Restoration to remaster classic horror movies.
  • Silver Salt to restore rare Hammer Films cult classics in stunning 4K quality

4k classic Hammer, magic words to my ears.... And Shout announcing Scars of Dracula was just the start...
I can only imagine the beautiful gory love when Lee is staked thru the heart in Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. Did not have any idea Scars of Dracula was getting a Shout treatment. That is most excellent!!!! Is it too much to hope for premium editions of these releases? Talk about Hammer heaven.

Scars of Dracula 4K release is coming from Kino Lorber not Shout
Release date has still TBA

Note Kino Lorber 4K release of Scars of Dracula is licenced from StudioCanal

If you read the article I posted in full note below
Silver Salt is working on the remastering of a number of rare Hammer Films cult classics, many of which have been out of circulation for years. These films will undergo 4K restoration and preservation, for new and old audiences
As in most of the films involved have been out of circulation for years in UK

It's mostly going to be the earlier films from Hammer that Network had the rights previously
Network with another parnter setup a new company called Hammer Studios and they was planning on new releases of the early hammer films but those plans halted when Network went into liquidation

Both companies Hammer Studios and Hammer Films was sold to John Gore

Hammer Films most of the mainstream hammer horror films catalouge is with various distributors in UK
Warner/Universal/Sony/StudioCanal/Lionsgate/Icon Films
Example powerhouse film label Indicator those hammer films collections was licenced from Sony

You might see some of the hammer films that StudioCanal have the rights in UK get 4K releases but that's TBC

It's not going to be hammer films you expecting and lot are not horror films
It's the early hammer films catalouge previously that network had the rights some of which have been out of circulation for years in UK and previously some was only available on VHS/DVD in UK
Network with the new compamy Hammer Studios had planned on doing 4K restorations of the early hammer films and then release them on Blu-ray
Those planned releases of the early hammer films would have been first time released in UK on Blu-ray but was halted when network went into liquidation.
Example these hammer horror films was planned for 4K restoration and release on Blu-ray by Network but got halted for above reason
Quatermass Xperiment
Quatermass 2
Abominable Snowman
Four Sided Triangle

You might see some of the hammer films that StudioCanal have the rights in UK get 4K releases but that's TBC and note the hammer films that are with StudioCanal in UK are still in circulation

Kino Lorder deal with StudioCanal was only for 1 film Scars of Dracula

For Kino lorber to do other hammer horror films in 4K from StudioCanal catalouge that will require a new licensing deal.

Did not Kino do 4k scans for Dracula Prince of Dracula, Curse of the Werewolf and The Devil Rides Out...

Did not Kino do 4k scans for Dracula Prince of Dracula, Curse of the Werewolf and The Devil Rides Out...
No those 4K restoration scans released on Blu-ray was done by StudioCanal/Universal and licensed by scream factory in USA.

Curse of the Werewolf rights are with Universal in USA
Dracula Prince of Darkness and The Devil Rides out rights are with StudioCanal

Shout licensing deal with StudioCanal has ended that is why Shout announced those hammer horror USA blu-ray releases are going OOP

Kino Lorber deal with StudioCanal is only for Scars of Dracula and no others releases planned at the moment unless a new deal is agreed for other films.

The hammer films network previously had the rights is in regards to early hammer films as in those films have been out of circulation in UK for years and that is what the article I posted mentioned.

So basically it's all a red herring as there will be few classic Hammer's on 4k. Shame....

StudioCanal/Arrow Films/BFI have used Silver Salt Restoration previously to do restorations on some of their releases.

The purchase of Silver Salt Restoration by John Gore Media (Hammer Films) It's not known yet how that will affect other labels releases who have used them but do note below

Arrow Films now have started on some releases to do their own restorations in-house of 4K UHD/Blu-ray releases at their sister company The Engine House Media Services (When THG purchased Arrow Films it also included Arrow sister company Engine House)
Arrrow previously used to outsource to other companies to do the restorations.

The Engine House Media Services used to do some authoring of UHD/Blu-ray discs but now also have started doing the actual restorations on some releases.
Arrow Video Madman 4K release was their first in-house restoration,

Back to discussing Hammer Films
I'm looking forward to watching the 90th anniversary documentary (Hammer: Heroes, Legends And Monsters) in November (Sky UK/Deep Fusion Production)

I stopped watching broadcast TV a long time ago. I just watch 4k or blu-ray releases now. But at least we know some classic Hammer's are forthcoming.

@Lollard2002

This Halloween, we're celebrating the 50th anniversary of Captain Kronos by making the first-ever 4K restoration of this beloved cult classic. This is the first in a series of Hammer restoration releases.

John Gore Studios Acquires Tyburn Films – Expanding its Global IP and Film Catalogue

John Gore Studios today announced the acquisition of Tyburn Film Productions Limited, along with the entirety of its film and television catalogue. Tyburn is one of the longest established British production companies – particularly known for its cult horror classics, acclaimed thrillers, and collaborations with screen legends including Peter Cushing, John Mills, Ray Milland, Christopher Lee, Anne Baxter and Lana Turner.

The deal marks an expansion of John Gore Studios’ international footprint into the world of legacy IP, unlocking a rich library of prestige British cinema and paving the way for future adaptations, remakes, prequels and sequels on a variety of platforms.

Award winning entertainment producer John Gore, a 25-time Tony winner, as well as a recipient of 2 Emmys and 2 Oliviers and Executive Chairman of John Gore Studios says, “Tyburn Films was a genre pioneer, elevating British horror and thrillers to new heights of storytelling. We see this acquisition as an opportunity to honour that legacy while imagining bold new futures for these stories across today’s global platforms.”

This move reflects John Gore Studios’ ongoing strategy to expand into IP-led media through the acquisition and revitalisation of iconic film libraries and heritage brands. The acquisition of Tyburn, alongside their other acquisitions, underscores the studio’s commitment to curating, restoring, and reimagining legacy content for new global audiences across film, television, and beyond.

Founded in 1971 by Kevin Francis, Tyburn earned a dedicated following for its gothic horror films (The Ghoul, Legend of the Werewolf, The Creeping Flesh, etc.) and psychological thrillers (Persecution, Murder Elite, etc.). The company’s slate is distinguished by its atmospheric productions, iconic casting, and literary ambition, making it a prized catalogue for modern reimagining.

Kevin Francis, founder of Tyburn, commented: “After 54 years with Tyburn, it is time for me to take things a little easier. Over the next year, I shall continue with Tyburn and assist in consolidating it within the John Gore Studios Group. I cannot think of a better future home for Tyburn and its catalogue – John Gore Studios understands both the tradition and opportunity which come with Tyburn.”

The acquisition includes all rights to Tyburn’s filmography, including:

  • The Creeping Flesh (1973) Starring: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Lorna Heilbron
  • The Ghoul (1975) Starring: Peter Cushing, John Hurt, Gwen Watford, Alexandra Bastedo
  • Legend of the Werewolf (1975) Starring: Peter Cushing, Ron Moody, Hugh Griffith
  • Persecution (1974) Starring: Lana Turner and Trevor Howard
  • The Masks of Death (1984) Starring: Peter Cushing, John Mills, Anne Baxter
  • Murder Elite (1985) Starring: Ali MacGraw, Billie Whitelaw, Hywell Bennett
  • Peter Cushing: A One-Way Ticket to Hollywood (Documentary) (1990) – Peter Cushing (in interview with Dick Vosburgh) Featuring archival footage with Laurel & Hardy, Laurence Olivier and from Star Wars, Nineteen Eighty-Four and more.
John Gore Studios’ CEO, Hilary Strong, has a wealth of experience in both intellectual property and rights optimisation. Her established track record of launching successful film and television productions, combined with managing prestigious IP and literary estates, makes her uniquely positioned to help drive and deliver exciting new opportunities in which both classic and new storytelling thrive.

John Gore Studios’ Chief Acquisitions Officer, Jonathan Lack, orchestrates the company’s expansion across entertainment and media through the acquisition of catalogues, intellectual property and production companies. Jonathan Lack says: “Smart strategic acquisitions such as Tyburn are designed to unlock world class creative possibilities. It is truly exhilarating to be able to give these titles the opportunity to be discovered by a new global audience and to be reimagined for future generations to enjoy.”

John Gore Studios launched in January this year and announced the inclusion of: Hammer Films, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in November 2024; Silver Salt Restoration, a leading UK film restoration studio; and all-rights international sales and UK distribution group, KFILM Ltd. The studio also recently announced a majority investment into UK production company Hilltop Screen, significantly expanding the group’s production capabilities. Together, these companies provide a fully integrated production pipeline for the studio to fulfil its mission to restore, create and innovate existing IP and take it to the global market in an exciting and invigorating way.

This year the company embarked on an ambitious restoration programme of Hammer’s classic films from the archive. The 4K restorations, newly restored by Silver Salt Restoration, are being released as meticulously curated Limited Collector’s Editions and are distributed theatrically, digitally and physically in the UK by Icon Film Distribution, part of KFILM Ltd.

John Gore Studios will restore Tyburn’s existing IP via Silver Salt Restoration for 4K premium releases and will also develop new production pipelines rooted in Tyburn IP, with select titles already under early development for adaptation.
