Response from ES about the finish they are going for on this release:
There’s an emboss on the title treatment, gloss varnish on the front, cutting out the characters and a dull varnish covering the back.

The red text and red image on the back is also a pantone red, which should be a bright pillar box red.

I'm falling out of love with the steelbook collecting game.

I am not fussed about the price, just would have been nice to have a fair chance of buying a copy within a couple of days at least instead of 2 hours or whatever.

So your telling me that some people are not buying 10+, 20+ at a time? I don't think 1000 copies would have sold that quickly in that short timeframe by people just buying 1 or 2 to be honest. i only wanted 1 for myself but miss out, ES should stick a 2 limit maximum on the next exclusive although that probably won't stop people getting round it by just creating more play accounts.

Anyone that bought 10+ copies fancy doing UK members a favour and organising a UK group buy?

By the way as i am having a rant have Zavvi released another exclusive steel yet, it's been a couple of days :naughty:

Well seeing as you ask X Files is up LOL Not 100% if its a Zavvi exclusive or not but then lets see what tomorrow brings no doubt theyll have another.

There is too much bitching in this forum and it should stop. Concentrate on what YOU are doing and not everybody else.

i for one am glad i managed to get a copy of this before it went OOS, i have never seen the film as the price for the cinema is about a tenner so the money i saved there goes to ordering this. As soon as this turns up the wrapping will go in the bin and the film will go in my player as i want to watch this each to there own as they say.

People. Let's keep it on track and positive. If you think the price is high, don't pay it...no sense in complaining.

Anyway, back on topic. Thought this movie completely bombed, but it appeared to at least make back it's budget? USA theatres (according to IMDB) at 55M?

Color me surprised.

From what I've read, it made a killing outside of the US (particularly in Europe) and ended up with a profit of approximately $150m worldwide. I think that's partly to do with the fact that Hansel & Gretel is a German tale, and maybe more understood and appreciate by Europeans.

I do think people forget that this release is advertised on other forums and not just HDN, people keep mentioning things like resellers probably bought 20-30 to resell but if you think about how many people from the UK use HDN as well as the other forums then 1000 will sell out very fast even if they only bought 1 or 2.

The 1987 H&G flick is a really solid effort:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093144/

I'd buy a steelbook of that one for sure.

We have one group buy already active, and a second to be posted on Saturday, at 19:00 BST.

So, seems like there is a chance to still get one, from one of these helpful members.

Thanks but there were only 3 spots for UK members on roverites GB

The one scheduled for Sat by CC is currently only for international members as far as i know?

I quite like the steelbook and pre ordered yesterday - Not going to miss out on it because of price - Korean / American and Canadian releases can be this price or more.

Why does everyone want this steelbook so bad? Is it expected to become a holy grail release? It wasn't that big a movie was it?

Read above and the OP.

1,000 print run, exclusive to the Entertainment Store in the UK - no other UK retailer will get this.

So that is a big part of it.

But holy grail might be taking it too far, as other retailers are sure to get this steelbook in Europe.

I'm hoping we get one in North America then.

Just a silly little question, how come the ES Store Exclusive means that no other UK retailer will get a steel of this movie? Can't Zavvi make their own "Zavvi Exclusive" of Hansel and Gretel with exclusive artwork even though they are also in the UK? I guess I just didn't realize that there can only be 1 exclusive per title per country.

Is this some kind of rights contract with Scanavo or something?

Studios decide who gets what in which country as I understand it.

In theory you could have 2 retailers with their own exclusive steelbooks of the same film, but historically only one UK retailer wins the bid for the exclusive steelbook version at a time

There are instances of same title and different exclusive slip covers for different retailers though

If I think about it I believe the first retailer to release a steelbook of a title which was previously another retailers exclusive is Zavvi, with Star Trek XI. Not that it's something I hope for more of going forward

The rights contract would be with the studio, not Scanavo

Before the days of steelbooks, you used to see a lot of retailer exclusives on titles - things like alternate sleeves, extra content etc. You don't tend to see that a lot now - mainly 1 retailer gets an exclusive something but the rest don't. Theoretically there's no reason why a title can't have 2 steelbooks in the same country at the same time, but I guess the studios make the decisions on these things not the retailer.
