I didn't have the older blu ray but looking at the screencaps on dvdbeaver the new image is definitely brighter with more grain present. I'm pleased with how it looks.

Should be Region Free, as there are Asian subtitles on the disc. Asia got the A Region.

It appears to be region free. I have a multi-region Panasonic player, which I set to Region A. I loaded up the Criterion edition of Blow Out which is A-locked, then ejected and loaded up Heat and it played.
