The problem I was trying to highlight though is that these HD releases are very old now comparatively, they really could do with some love and attention, especially given their sumptuous cinematography and production design.

However you look at it, most of the versions of Hero out there are pretty rough in comparison to what we're used to nowadays.

I have the old Edko Hong Kong dvd release from years and years ago as well as the Miramax Blu ray.

I'd love a 4k remaster so I'd rather wait than search out the best version on blu ray.

Sure, there's always room for improvement. However, 4K unfortunately doesn't always mean an improvement, whether it's DNR, upscales, AI, incorrect colour grading, overly aggressive HDR or shorter cuts.

My point was that the masters back then were already new scans and not ancient Telecine HD masters like those still in circulation today, such as Falling Down. That's why I asked who created these masters back then.

happy days. :) finally picked this up during the last Winter sale. like @ethnosax, my existing UK steel has gone straight in this. a few pictures to add a bit of colour to what's been said above already. if you prefer, just the pics are here. :Snap:

i've only tested the discs so far rather so far rather than watch them in full, but further to comments above, but there does seem to be a picture quality drop off in the director's cut scenes. o_O agree with the discussion above, this film needs a remaster. :watch:

as previously mentioned, the front cover has some spot treatment on the lettering, likewise the slipbox top. the whole slipbox has a matt surface texture covering that i don't mind, but it's such a dark cover for a film that has so much colour in it:

when you look at the rear and also the interior art, you are reminded more of the fabulous colours in the film:

the amaray itself has the same approach, drab in the outside, colourful inside:

all in all, it's a middling release of a great film that will go well with the existing steelbook until someone brings out a proper remastered set.
