Steelbook & Collecting FAQ's:

Q: Where can I find a list of Steelbooks released?

A: blu-raysteelbooks.com

Q: Can I play movies contained inside Steelbooks on my Blu-Ray Player?

A: It depends-Blu-Rays are coded with Region A, B or C. Most Blu-Rays are "unlocked", regardless of what region they are, but it's always a good idea to check this forum or web resources before buying, as some are "locked".

Q: What are the differences between Steelbooks™, Iron Packs™, Metal Paks™, Viva Metal Boxes, Tins, etc?

A: Check out pics and discussion in our forum here

Q: What does "G1" and "G2" mean when discussing Steelbooks?

A: "G1" (1st Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a DVD-sized case. And "G2" (2nd Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a Blu-Ray-sized case.

Q: How to fix a loose disc on a steelbook you want to keep factory sealed that came with a floater?

A: Fixing a loose disc

Q: How do I navigate international shopping sites?

A: You can download a free 'add on' for most browsers called 'Google Translate'. Once you have it installed, the pages will translate automatically.

Q: I have many more questions-is there a general list of links to help me learn about Steelbooks, protecting them, etc?

A: Yes, here

Here are some pics of a recent package I received. With this kind of packaging it is no wonder that all arrived damaged.

I have only had a few problems with damaged steelys from play and have always got a replacement with no questions asked. I always call up to get a replacement instead of emailing as this way you can talk to an actual person and find out how and whats going on and how to go about returning the item and so on...

But please restrain from emailing about replacements, i always call up and have had no probs...

I've sent things back to Play few times (non steelbooks) and they do always send the money back it just taks a while. HMV are the same. If memory seves it took about 3 weeks once before I got my money back.

...Not about returns but with missing stuff EEK!

The only company (so far) with SBs not delivered is from Play. About 10% goes AWOL. It's not the big packages but the small individual packages...Anybody else?

I had them same a few months ago but i put it down to a new Postman in which i came to the conclusion he was a Steelbook collector and had them sat on his shelf at home  ... btw was from Play, HMV & AVForum so not an individual company.

Had an email from Play today confirming 2 of the 3 steelbooks had being received (already processing in warehouse) but looks like my Taken has gone awol as was the first steelbook i sent back :(

Why Ironman? Why is that the one to have, why do some steels get just crazy?

Im just getting into the steelbook game, but I did look at these before a few years ago and Ironman was still the steel to have. There are other valuable steels, but they make some sense. The John Rambo one has something to do with the German government right? Thres is an Independence day with a misprint. Not sure about Indiana Jones.

Ironman though has always been way high, was it a super low production run? They just did re releases on play.com for both Ironman and Ironman2 and they both sold out on preorder already.

I mean its a good movie, but its no Oscar contender. Id venture to say both Batmans are better movies in the superhero genre, but they don't go like Ironman does, though the Japanese ones do seem to be trending that way. Is it the artwork? Personally to me its ok, but its just ironman on the front.

Again Ive been gone for a while so maybe I didn't see, but there seems to be at least a few different ironman steels around. Are they all recent? Is it so valuable because the FS one was the only one available for a long time?

Still though I don't get it because is a decent movie, but not one that I feel I NEED to have in in my collection. It would be int the category of nice steel to have if I got one at a decent price, not something Im going to chase and pay 400+ for.

Does that seem right or just way off base since I haven't been watching trends until recently?

Hi mate,

I've been into steelbooks for a few months now, I had similar questions to you when I joined. Of course TDK is a better film then IM 1 and 2, but in terms of artwork and other merchandise, I would have to give it to IM. For me, it is baffling why the FS IM became so sort after. It's not rare per say.

The artwork did leave me with an open mouth when I first laid eyes on it, but play have come out with a copy just as good IMHO, the MM version was also very nice and has gone on to be worth a lot of money. I think the original G1 dvd from FS was actually better looking, but had it been G2 size. Perhaps it is just down to trends? I certainly haven't found a better answer.

One thing you need to be careful on though is speculating on the FS IM value at this point. For me, it is worth a lot less now play.com have come out with their version. Not to say it is worthless, it will always be the original. It retained it's value even after the MM releases so who knows?

A lot what Rix says ....

Has a lot to do with art. There are plenty of sub-par movies that got bought up in a frenzy just cause the steelbook looked bad ass. (Green Hornet for one) Now I'm not saying that HORRIBLE movies that look cool sell well .... but the point is the majority of steel collectors value art first ... Because after all that is what we are typically paying the premium for. In the case of these recent Play.com titles I wouldnt call it a premium as they have been awesome priced. But in general, we tend to pay a premium for the premium packaging.

Comic book movies are simply just that, comic book film adaptations so they got their claim to fame from first being something of awesome art as comic book artists drew them. So they tend to just look "cooler" coming from that side of the industry. So when done right, their steelbooks also look great. The marketing for comic book movies is also all around us, so they tend to be well known characters and movies. Thus that helps the overall demand. And when more normal consumers snatch up these types of editions (steelbooks) that leaves less around for the Steelbook Collector Market ... thus the age old adage, supply and demand.

Some people tend to think just because you can find it on ebay the supply must have been high. In retrospect, its because the market value of one nets a good return that you can usually find one on ebay. People get tired of it or need some fast cash and thats the one in their collection that will net them the most ...

Maybe you can work on getting us a Raid type of cover for some of these comic book adapted films. Perhaps Losers, Constatine, Hellboy or Punisher.

"The Dark Knight/Batman Begins" UK vs FR

I have just received my Batman Begins/The Dark Knight UK blu ray steelbook and instantly noticed it was a jumbo and are limited to 8000 copies (i have 1004).

I compared it to my French version and like them just as much, with noticeable differences where the finishing is concerned...

I can't decide which is best :wtf:

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
if you don't already have these steels, look at pics below...

Both have their pros and cons, which almost makes them equal for me... but does the French version have interior art? If so, then I'd have to go with FR. But if not, then UK all the way!
