How many dollars are we talking here?
Assuming a large sum (say... 20-30 million after taxes) I would payoff/buy a solid house (nothing big, right fitted, good foundation, and in a good neighborhood built with quality materials) and reinvest the rest for the future generations of my family to live off of.
The interest collected along with dividends from investments could very well settle my property taxes and give me a monthly check that would allow me to live comfortably within my reasonable means for the rest of my life.
I'm not in to living large, and I generally hate talking about money. I work in the financial world and have seen what idiots can do with mismanaging their funds. To have my monthly installments covered and some pocket change to do things I enjoy like brewing, playing music, watching movies, and listening to music and take care of the wife and kids - I'm good. Nothing fancy, just enough.

by a house in the caribbean, buy a house in northern WI, put a lot away, give away half of it, then just spend the rest on plane tickets back and forth between my two cribs!
Pay off my moms house and buy her an Infinity FX. I would buy my brother a Camaro, my sister a new car. I would buy myself some luxury sedan and a decent house with a huge home theater. I would invest about 1/4 of whatever I have left in stocks and bonds. Put 1/2 in a high interest CD account. Than the remaining would be my spending money.
and after that I would get an american bank account with all the money and within the next 5 years I would gain at least 20% when our canadian doller tanks again.
I'd also buy 2 houses side by side ... one for my wife
just make sure you have your own set of locks!
I'd do the typical, car, house (in the US and Tokyo), travel, etc. Then i'd try to acquire a large portion of a movie studio so I could have the films made that I want, and i'd be able to make the films I want.

I don't think I would quit my job, I kinda like it. It would be a lot less stressful if I didn't need to be perfect. I think I would help some of the people there too, there are quite a few single mother I would help out.
