HMV just emailed me to notify me that Immortals 3D + 2D Steelbook is available to preorder at a price of £23.99. The website hasnt updated at the time of writing this, but should do in a few hours.

£23.99 damn that's a lot of money for an average movie at best.

Hoping to see a better price and/or other releases for this.

I just placed an order on Amazon.uk, it said 17.99 but it checked me out at 14.99. My total was 18.07 in UK funds

US does not have to pay VAT, think of it as free shipping ;)

I must be thick, But I have always paid the same price as listed on Amazon.UK. But why wouldn't I still get charged just the 17.99 and shipping? Dumb American, what can you do?

Ricker, have no fear, it's almost time for that special eggnog :hilarious::hilarious:

So Amazon UK has the best deal on this? No brainer for a 3D BR title. Awesome!

Ordered-Ricker you're not paying the same price-VAT is deducted on very last page. Next time, just take a look there, you'll see it:)

Any particular reason to order from Amazon? Do they have a safer shipping method? I know HMV use Cardboard Box Sleeves, and play are rather random with theirs.

Amazon ships them a bit safer. they are wrapped in bubble wrap under the cardboard mailer.
Also for this release the price difference is £6.

For members outside of the UK that are ordering the VAT is dropped.
Mine only came to £18.07 which included shipping.

Think of VAT as a sales tax. They're both forms of consumption tax. However, VAT is built into the sales price, where as in the US, sales tax is always added to the existing sales price. VAT is not charged to US purchasers, so your end price gets reduced. Same thing should happen with Amazon.de, at least if you purchase from Amazon directly. Not sure about third party sellers.

Again I don't mean to sound like an idiot, so Amazon is the only ones that have the VAT?

No, the UK as a whole charges VAT (Value Added Tax). Its a form of tax they have, much like most states in the US charge sales tax. But just like you often don't have to pay sales tax for online purchases (if you're not ordering from an in-state company and not in some state with specific rules like New York), US customers don't pay UK VAT.

amazon.de also removes the VAT.
It's always nice to see, unfortunately there shipping is still high at 14 Euros compared to £4 from amazon.co.uk

Thanks, I understand all that, so why don't we get reduced prices on HMV? Or are UK residents charged the VAT after the price?:emb:

That's a good question, and one I've not fully figured out. I believe it comes from the fact the company is registered in Guernsey, which is sort of part of the UK and sort of not (its complicated, but while the UK does provide some benefits to Guernsey, it's not an official recognized part of the UK) . Short answer is that Guernsey is not part of the EU and essentially they list prices exclusive of VAT. I believe (but anyone can correct me if I'm wrong) this loophole allowed them to charge lower prices to local (i.e UK) buyers (although I believe they changed import taxes recently), while effectively making it more expensive to foreign (i.e. US) buyers.

Ricker, Amazon's system has the capability to remove VAT automatically. HMV does not. However, it's a little confusing on their site because when you click 'Help' and then 'International Shoppers', it says prices are 'exclusive of VAT' for deliveries from Guernsey to countries other than the UK, which sounds a little like a US customers should be charged the cost minus VAT. A LONG time ago, I thought I read something about being able to contact certain shops to have VAT removed. But I can't remember details at all, so someone else would need to chime in if they have facts.
