I wouldn’t say it’s “good” per say, but nothing like seeing Karen Black inhabited by a voodoo doll spirit that jumps into her, LOL. First saw as kid so more favorite because of that. Mom was huge fan of Italian and cult horror. And bonus-just found out it’s coming out in Blu-ray-naturally I ordered. I posted thread a while back where you can see the fabulous cover in the Blu-ray forum.

That Blu-ray looks like a pretty great release. I just found out that the full film is on YouTube, so I'll probably watch it there first. :p

And that's AWESOME that your mom was a fan of cult horror. The closest thing to horror that my Mom watched for that possession storyline in Days of Our Lives.

HAPPY OCTOBER 1ST, NINJAS! :vamp:

I just found out that Halloween (1978) and Ghostbusters (1984) will be re-released in my local theatre, so I'm ecstatic! It'll be my first time watching both on the big screen!

So I have my list put together. It currently sits at 35 films because there's a few franchises that I want to tackle completely this year. It's also above the 31 mark because Netflix keeps adding scary, unannounced surprises (which I'm sure they will do more of throughout the entire month) AND because there's a few films that I'm going to check out theatrically this month.

Here's my 2018 Halloween marathon:

Apostle
Army of Darkness
Bad Milo
Beyond the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Cargo
Creep
Creep 2
Devil's Gate
Don't Grow Up
The Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
The Faculty
Friday the 13th Pt. 4
Friday the 13th Pt. 5
Ghostbusters (1984)
Halloween (1978)
Halloween (2018)
Hatchet
Hatchet 2
Hatchet III
Hell Fest
Hocus Pocus
The House with a Clock in its Walls
Hostile
The Lodgers
Monster House
REC 4: Apocalypse
Revenge
Temple
Terrifier
Trick 'r Treat
Trilogy of Terror
Venom
Veronica
Victor Crowley

Alrighty, everyone -- marathon away! Let's see what we can all watch this month. I'll update my list as I go.

Our horrorfilm marathon started a week early, so I won't count the movies that I watched but I'll share my thoughts anyway:

Suddenly in the Dark (1981) - 1.5/5
I really wanted to like this one because the KimchiDVD release looks amazing to me. Unfortunately, the movie wasn't my cup of tea.
It was like a Korean take on Giallo, a genre which doesn't exactly tickle my fancy. It had some interesting visuals with a reccuring caleidoscope effect.
However, the audio was terrible. The movie doesn't really much on horror in the first place, but the lackluster synths, dubbed voices and cheap sound effects killed the entire atmosphere.

The Ring (2002) [Rewatch] - 3.5/5
This remake of The Ring was the first horror movie I ever saw and it always stuck with me.
I love the concept and the cinematography is brilliant. The performances are great across the board.
Still, I had to lower my initial 4* score to 3.5* because the movie as a whole felt heavily commercialized.
It also should have ended 15 minutes earlier imo. Even though it lost some of its impact, it was still a very enjoyable watch.

Dearest Sister (2016) - 3.0/5
An interesting movie from Laos of all places. It's a ghost movie but it relies more on its family-drama dynamic than on horror.
I appreciated the way in which the movie showed the social class differences that are still very much present in Laos and how it heavily influences relationships between people.
The movie was also pleasing to look at, especially the ghost-dimension looked great. Other than that it didn't have a huge impact on me, but I'd still recommend it for fans of smaller Asian drama movies with horror influences.

Left Bank (2008) - 3.5/5
Very pleasant Belgian movie that just like Dearest Sister is more over a drama with horror influences. It's a slow-burn with good performances and a compelling story that kept me hooked.
The movie relies a lot on its bleak atmosphere enhanced by the dreary cinematography and fitting music. Even though the ending left a bit to be desired from an audiovisual standpoint, I liked the movie overall.

Cat Sick Blues (2016) - 3.5/5
One of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen. Its mostly about a guy who is so traumatized by his cat's passing that he starts to brutally murder people while dressed as a cat.
Usually I dislike slashers in which innocent people are murdered in graphic ways for pleasure. However, this movie is so outlandish and stylish that I couldn't help but dig it.
The Australian humor present in this film is very, very dark and it will likely put off a lot of people, but it kinda worked. Especially the use of music is brilliant.

III: The Ritual (2015) - 3.0/5
This small Russian movie is very light on plot and character development, but manages to overcome those flaws with its stunning visuals and pulsating electronic score.
Even though it looked a tad cheap sometimes, the warm filters and visual effects gave the desolate Eastern-European setting an appealing surreal dimension.
However, because the film is extremely slow-paced, my brain turned itself off at some point after which I was watching it as a music video instead of a film with a story to tell.
Not that that's a bad thing, but I don't think it will have a lasting impact on me.

Mandy (2018) - 5/5
Wow, what an astonishing acid trip. I really liked Beyond the Black Rainbow after rewatching it a couple of weeks ago, but this is on another level.
When the movie opened with King Crimson's Starless, one of my favourite songs of all time, I knew I was in for a wonderful experience and boy I couldn't have asked for more.
On an audiovisual level this is one of the most impressive movies I've ever seen. It overwhelmed me with its brooding, hallucinogenic atmosphere and by the time Niclas Cage is out for revenge I was totally on board.
I loved the sense of "magical realism" that this movie provided. It felt like being transported to a different dimension on this planet. The performances were fantastic as well.
Cage is crazy as ever and I couldn't be more ready for his upcoming project with Japan's mad genius Sion Sono.
Considering that Panos Cosmatos managed to develop such a unique style over the course of only two movies make me excited for the future!

Catch-up:

1. Rampo Noir (2005) - 3/5
Pretty twisted Japanese anthology movie including 4 shorts based on stories from Edogawa Ranpo. It was very stylish and artsy which I liked a lot, but I couldn't really get into the stories themselves.

2. Lake Mungo (2008) - 3/5
Not bad for a faux-documentary style horror movie. It was pretty well constructed, but the ghost aspect feels a bit played out by now.

3. The Last Circus (2010) - 2.5/5
This horror comedy wasn't really my cup of tea. I liked that the story was bizarre and keeps that you never know what will happen next. However, the characters didn't appeal to me and I didn't at all care what would happen to them. I also thought it looked a bit cheap at times.

4. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) - 3/5
Pretty decent haunted house film. Really consistent in its style which I appreciated and I liked the way it played with genre conventions. In the end, it was a tad too uneventful to make a lasting impression.

5. The Innocents (1961) - 3.5/5
Another good haunted house film. I liked the black and white cinematography as well as the spooky design of the big mansion. Acting is a bit theatrical which makes sense considering that it came out in the sixties.

6. The Thing (1982) [Rewatch] - 4/5
Great film with amazing monster design and a fun concept. I feel like the kills could've been more impactful if the characters were more fleshed out and likeable, but with such a big cast I understand its impossible to flesh out all the characters.
Kurt Russell is a badass though!

7. The Shining (1980) [Rewatch] - 3.5/5
Love the setting and the cinematography. Especially the hallucination scenes are brilliantly executed. The main problem I've always had with the Shining is that I really don't like the characters. I think Jack Nicholson's arc is flawed and Shelley Duvall is only used for looking distraught and crying. She deserved better in my opinion. So yeah, brilliant in terms of filmmaking, but not as compelling as a drama.

8. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) - 3/5
I thought this was alright. Interesting plot and good performances from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. The supporting cast wasn't great however. Two hours and fifteen minutes is just way too long for a movie like this in my opinion.

9. Apostle (2018) - 3.5/5
Cool horror-thriller from The Raid director Gareth Evans, which takes place in a setting that I love. A Victorian-era religious cult? Sign me up! The movie aims to establish a consistent dreadful atmosphere instead of going the jump-scare route, which I can only applaud. I was impressed by some of the haunting imagery and the costumes. However, I still felt like it was too flashy at times and lacking authenticity. I had hoped for something a bit grimier. I also ended up being a bit disappointed by the fact that the filmmakers did not have the courage to be as unforgiving as the film initially presented itself to be.

10. Profondo Rosso (1975) - 2/5
I'm sorry Giallo-fans! I'll never be a fan but I thought Suspiria and Phenomena were quite a bit better than this Argento film. The cinematography is always on point in his films, but I really disliked the music, the dubbing, the uninteresting characters and the pulpy nature of it all.

I also checked out TERRIFIER on Netflix after hearing rave reviews from the horror community and... nope. No thanks. I love my horror flicks, but gore-porn, torture-porn, and cannibalism are things that just disgust me. There's nothing scary about those sub-genres — they’re just gross. Add in the villain writing his name on walls in his own feces and yup... what a waste of life it was to watch this “film”.

I'm seeing John Carpenter play live on friday, so I've been catching up on his films. This week I've watched Halloween, The Thing, The Fog, They Live, Christine and Assault On Precinct 13 so far this week.

Oh, I'd LOVE to see John play live! His new 'Halloween Triumphant' track is absolutely amazing!

11. World War Z (2013) - 2/5
Couldn't get into this one. Extremely superficial story full of clichés and one-dimensional characters. The frantic cinematography and quick cuts didn't help. Seeing the zombies storm the wall was pretty rad though.

12. Train to Busan (2016) - 3.5/5
A lot better than World War Z imo. I liked the way the characters were set up. The pacing was good and the film was quite stylish (as we can expect from a Korean film). There were some great shots in here and the practical zombie hordes were impressive.
I could do with a bit less sentimentality, but I can only applaud the way in which director Yeon managed to make a zombiefilm that takes place in a train and make it interesting and intense for two hours.

13. Manhunter (1986) - 3.5/5
Cool detective-thriller from Mann. The visuals and (neon)lighting were very satisfying. In terms of the narrative it wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it was compelling enough. I wanted to give it 4 out of 5*, but unfortunately the ending soiled it and I thought the music was a bit cheesy.

14. The Devil Rides Out (1968) - 3.5/5
Very fun Hammer horror movie. Not particularly scary, but entertaining nontheless. I love me some occult nonsense. The movie wouldn't be half as good without Christopher Lee though. What a legend.

15. Repulsion (1965) - 4/5
Great psychological horrorclassic. Extremely nerve-wrecking due to the slow pace, the oppressive cinematography and the jazzy score. Catherine Deneuve is amazing to look at, but I think the performance would've benefitted from a bit more nuance.

So, there we have it... 22 days into the marathon and I've only seen 16 movies and 1 television show. Definitely have some catching up to do. Hell Fest and The House with a Clock in its Walls have already been removed from my local theatre, so I likely won't be watching those now. (n)

@bloodsnake007 @rj531 Are you 'marathoning' this year?

Glad you like it, mate! I tend to type out slightly longer reviews in Dutch but don't feel like translating them in their entirety, so I try to just stick to the aspects that stood out to me the most.
