“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

Each console will come packaged with a NES Classic Controller, though a Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro can also be used. When connected to a Wii Remote controller, the NES Classic Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii system.

It would have been better had they had the unit connect with the internet to be able to download game ala Carte beyond they 50 it comes with... And is the controller wireless? (If not, that would be kinda bad too- beacuse most people don't have their systems set up to have a corded game system attached. (In cabinets)).

Now also available from Amazon UK for £49.99.

Already sold out on zavvi?! Or preorders haven't started yet? But you can preorder the extra controller...

It was available to pre-order all day yesterday... their listings are forever switching between in stock and sold out though, so I wouldn't worry. I've ordered from Amazon. :)

Thanks! I have pre-ordered from Amazon, too. I wanted to order extra controller but couldn't find it on Amazon UK.

Nintendo answers a few questions:
Will the mini-NES be able to connect to the internet?

No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices. The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognizable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players. Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy.

On the same note: does Nintendo plan to sell other NES games for the mini-NES beyond the 30 it comes preloaded with?

No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices. The 30 games included with the system were chosen to provide a wide variety of top-quality, long-lasting game-play experiences.

Are there plans for other mini-consoles, like a mini-SNES or mini-N64?

We have nothing to announce at this time.

Just because people have been asking: safe to say it can’t play old cartridges, right? (Based on the image it looks like an NES cartridge would have around the same width as the entire console.) Does it open up at all?

The console does not use physical media and therefore the Chamber Lid does not open.

Nintendo answers a few questions:
Thanks for sharing man... some of those questions had crossed my mind too, but I gathered the overall answer would be a no.

I reckon there's probably a good chance that they'll release mini versions of their other consoles if the NES sells well though, which it already seems to be doing... it's now also "currently unavailable" on Amazon UK.
