Another disappointing Steelbook from Warner, no spot gloss, no beautiful red metallic title like on the Blu-ray Disc Steelbook. Another case where the Blu-ray Disc Steelbook is significantly better.

We've known for ages that it's not had bossing. To be perfectly honest, I really dislike the scowling Jack Nicholson on that original Blu-ray steel despite some great colour and bossing on the title and frame.
I prefer the blu ray cine edition with the slipcase. I get your point though.

Amazon driver just squeezed it through the letter box which is normally bad news for any steels.

The WB box saves the day though so no damage, still think the art sucks but for £20? I can live with that.

Can't be sniffed at for that price...now why aren't all mid level steels this price?
Granted, it's not exactly pretty

Just arrived. Glad about the white WB box, turned up in mint condition. I like the steel in hand

It's definitely not a dog, more like round my end, what we call a council estate beauty.
:D :naughty:.
I do like the spot metallic use, especially on the feathers on the reverse.

How can anyone know that? There are always surprises when it comes to embossing or debossing. What's more, metallic effects on the red title and spot gloss could have significantly enhanced the Steelbook.
What bothers me about the Cine Edition is Jack Nicholson's blue face; somehow, it doesn't fit with the film for me. But didn't the edition come with a book? Wasn't it a hardcover slipcase?
Then there was also a digibook for the film.

Why not painted artwork by an artist like Tony Stella or Paul Shipper?

Is it a nice matte finish?
It’s neither amazing or poor. In the middle. I know that don’t really help but it’s just okay. But I like the art and got it for £19.99 from Amazon so it makes it a bit easier to accept plus first time I’ve upgraded since DVD

Yep. Digibook, slipcase and book.
The original steel was aesthetically unpleasing, at least to my eyes. The scowl from Jack Nicholson was a poor choice. Look, it's subjective. Isn't it always.

As far as embossing and debossing advance knowledge goes, by "ages" I guess my exaggeration is due to seeing the US release a far few weeks before the UK, coupled with the semi openness we are getting recently with distribution or production companies listing finishes on their pre order marketing - eg. SONY/Disney.
Although Warner are clearly not doing that.

I agree, the design choice is weak at best, it certainly isnt pretty, but it really is by no means a dog. I mean, I'm not pretty but I don't think anyone would consider me a dog either.

A decent mid range steelbook for as low as we managed to secure it here at one point - for £19.99 - I dont think we can scoff at that. Would I have liked a premium "Manta like" finish...absolutely. Am I fine with this?
For £19.99. Yep. I am.

Have you seen the finish on the Barry Lyndon steelbook from Warner? It's incredible and a lot of us managed to secure that for under £20. It just shows you Warners utter bonkers decisions.
Warner can't make anything with any consistency.

Pretty "meh" steelbook overall. Was hoping they'd do some sort of special edition with a nice, thick slipbox, but this'll have to do for now I suppose.

Not everything is subjective; there are some basic rules in design (cropping, title placement, color scheme, etc.). For example, the green rear artwork of the Zavvi Aliens Steelbooks did not match the blue front artwork at all.

Jack Nicholson's scowl fits in this respect, as it is a still from the film and the story is very tragic. There are several stills of Jack Nicholson with a scowl. It also seems to me that the still was black and white and Warner colored it. I find the artwork decent, no more and no less. What makes the Steelbook very nice are the embossing and the red metallic effect on the title.

The big problem is the information policy, because embossing or finishes are rarely announced. This used to be different with Zavvi Steelbooks, for example Taxi Driver or the black Kubrick Collection.

The manufacturing quality of a release in Europe cannot be deduced from a US release, and vice versa. For example, some Disney Steelbooks had different embossing in the US than in Europe. I remember the ugly Steelbooks of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. In contrast, there were Steelbooks that were significantly better made in Europe, for example The Untouchables with spot gloss art deco elements and debossed bullet holes. Even in Germany, there were differences compared to other countries, for example Pitch Black, Spartacus, and King Kong with nice embossing in 2019.

The retail price is irrelevant to the manufacturing quality; there are many Blu-ray Steelbooks from waves that were very high quality. The 4K Steelbooks on the other hand are utter garbage, see Unforgiven.

That's why I don't pre-order anything anymore and wait for product images. If the manufacturing quality isn't good, I don't buy the product. If all collectors did this, publishers (and Scanavo) would be forced to offer better quality.
Why should I be satisfied with something that isn't beautiful or well made?

To use your example, you are a human being, and you can't buy people, but you can buy a Steelbook.

Sorry, I forgot. You know best.

Everything is subjective. Buy it. Don't buy. It's a subjective choice.

Design rules are for the designers.

If I hate a design. I won't buy it

That's a subjective decision I make.

I'm bored with this conversation now.

I am a designer myself, so I know that there are rules and that not everything is subjective. You are making a mistake in your thinking. I'm not saying you have to like the Blu-ray Disc Steelbook. But from a design standpoint, there's not much to criticize about the old Steelbook. Unfortunately, the problem is that there isn't any really good artwork for this classic. That's why it would have been better if Warner had commissioned an artist like Tony Stella.

My Aliens example clearly showed what is objectively a design flaw. The green rear was not a conscious decision; 20th Century Fox and the agency they hired were simply too lazy to adjust the color of the artwork. This was then done for the other Steelbooks.

If you are so uncritical and support mediocre or poor releases with your purchases, you are contributing to the further deterioration of the market.

I have provided examples and arguments here. If you are bored by the conversation, that is neither my fault nor my problem.
