How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

Like many have said already, it really depends on your end game. For me there are maybe 3 main types of SB buyer (collectors, consumers, profiteers).

I also think that all buyers have all these traits but with varying priorities. If you are purchasing the SB as a consumer, imo it really doesn't matter if the SB is OOS, OOP, if only 1000 were made, or if it's worth hundreds of £s, $s or €s. As a consumer you would have no intention of profiteering, swapping the item, therefore the only way you can really enjoy it, is by opening it. In most cases it's the only way you will no it's truelly mint.

And although it's not used as much as it used to be, the fugitive glue on the back, if not removed after sometime can actually damage the steelbook finish.

If you're collecting it depends on how you collect, some keep them sealed, some open then seal them in sleeves and some just open them.

If you're profiteering/swapping then obviously you'd keep it sealed.

So going back to your post it's 'smart to open' if you have no intention of reselling or swapping the steelbook otherwise it doesn't matter IMO :D

Since I buy Steelbooks of movies I like, and intend to wach multiple times, I open them and don't care if it's smart or not.

I think it's stubid to buy Steelbooks and never open them. But each one buy these for their own reasons so I won't judge them.

Open them....how else would you watch them.

But put it this way, if you're buying your 3rd Dark Knight release, chances are you've seen the film already so would there be any point in opening it straight away? Or do you wait and see how the collectibility of the release develops?

Opened most, some sealed. If it's a new release most probably open to watch. If it's an expensive rare steel I obtained most probably keep sealed but I have opened rare's in the past.

If it's Disney I open all of them :) They are classics and I'm sure everyone will enjoy them in the future.

I'm just saying this goes back to my autograph jersey example.. I would protect my auto jersey(OOP steel) and show it off.... But buy a non auto jersey(reg blu ray/double dip copy) and wear it as many times as possible. I guess the real question should be... If you buy a Steel that's OOP and you know it cause you spent a lot of $$ on it. Do you frame it(going back to the jersey example) sit back and feel like you achieved something? Who knows! You could have been saving for weeks or traded several steels just to get it!

Your 100 perc. Right! I've seen Iron Man atleast 50 times.. There's no way I'm ripping that open! EEK!

For me maybe or maybe not. First off I would rarely double dip unless its a favorite and even a lot of my favorites I don't have on Blu yet so theres that.

Secondly I just like opening them and looking at everything on the back and inside.

I do see your point though and yeah if it was one I already had it would be easier to keep sealed or just put it on the shelf with the rest of the Blu Rays, which I have dome with some Blues Ive bought. There there on the shelf unopened. Not really because I meant to do it, its just I bought them put them there and haven't watched them yet.

Yeah though I supposed I could leave it sealed to see if the value went up a ton, but even then I don't know, it will still be plenty sought after and valuable opened. If I could sell one or 2 Steels though and cover my collection, or at least offset it, that would be nice.

Again I'd say it depends on what you wanted from the purchase? Say if you bought a 3rd Dark Knight release, unless it's a new film transfer I'd assume you were buying it because either the SB looked good, you were an uber fan or it was limited. For any of these scenarios I still don't think it matters, if you wanted it because of the look and you wanted in your collection I can't see any benefit in keeping it sealed? When there are many benfits for opening it. :D

I open nearly all of mine. I don't open my Batman/TDK collection bar the ones I could only buy opened. Other steels I purchased as trading chips stay sealed just so I have a better chance to trade.

I polybag them after I have ripped them to my Plex system and then they go on the shelf.

I'm not great at buying opened though, for some reason i still prefer to buy a sealed one even though I know I'm going to open it. Money. Down. The. Drain.

Not necessarily money down drain. At least when you got it new there's a good chance it will be mint :). I am like that sometimes, even if I am going to open it I rather it was brand new sealed.

I prefer to buy open/mint copies. You never know what's lurking behind those backing sheets which are becoming more and more common now. The seal can also hide missing paint spots and small dents/creases. At least when buying an open steel, you can see exactly what you're getting.

A question for you fans of sealed steelbooks. How much value does the steelbook lose when you break off the shrinkwrap?

Any examples?

I bought 2x Resident Evil Trilogy (Korea) when they were released. My plan was to keep one and sell/trade the other. Seeing them going up in price, made me change my mind...I`ll sell/trade both of them but I don`t know when. Guess I will be happy with my "Walmart" releases of the RE movies instead.

Do you open or keep Steelbooks sealed?

Hey All-I am posting a new poll, as new collectors and enthusiasts are joining our site all the time. So what do you do with your Steels? Poll added.

Have fun!

I open every single one of my Steelbooks, apart from those I have acquired for trading (mostly doubles). No point in leaving them sealed as I don't want to have to buy more than one copy of a film. It's also the reason why I don't have more than one version of the same film. Actually that's a lie, I do own two copies of Scott Pilgrim and Shaun of the Dead, but i'm in the process of selling the inferior (in my opinion) versions.
