Nonstop gaming world record has been shattered

dutch-gamers-winning.jpg

Prior to this past weekend, the world record for nonstop gaming stood at 40 hours. As of today, you'll need to rock 'n roll for 51 hours in a row if you'd like to claim this crown. A half dozen lunatics managed to game for 50 straight hours over the weekend in Rotterdam, playing Red Dead Redemption on Sony's PlayStation 3 until their eyes gave way. Of note, they utilized the TwistDock in order to keep their controllers juiced the entire time, and they walked away with €1,000 for their trouble. Last we heard, though, they're all in hibernation for the foreseeable future. Plenty of Dutch celebration awaits you in the video.

Isn't that kind of dangerous - although, throw in Warhawk and relieve me of my responsibilities (the little things, like wife, kid, job. . . ) and I'm sure I could break that record. :D

Physical and digital distribution sales for games nearly equal!

There are two ways to look at physical media. Some see it as needless clutter; useless relics taking up shelf space and collecting the airborne remnants of your dearly departed skin cells. Others, however, see rows and rows of boxes and books with a sense of pride -- proof that they have incredibly good taste when it comes to spending free time. According to the NPD, those two parties are rapidly becoming equal when it comes to gaming, with 21.3 million "full-game" PC titles downloaded (legally) in 2009 and 23.5 million boxed copies sold. That's awfully close, and ignores all the PSN and XBLA titles that are currently making our console hard drives cry for mercy. Should brick and mortar software stores be nervous? Not according to GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines, whose franchises are decidedly ceramic and paste-based: "The world won't be all digital tomorrow... In this business, users still want physical content." And he's right, you know. We'd say it'll be more like 18 - 24 months.

Crytek: We'd make PS3 exclusive

Ruddy marvellous game maker Crytek has told CVG that it would consider creating a console exclusive game for Sony in future - just as it has for Microsoft with Codename: Kingdoms.

The Xbox 360 Kingdoms announcement was one of E3 2010's biggest shocks - and came complete with a very nifty trailer, starring a bloodied Centurion.

However, Crytek boss Cervat Yerli told CVG that the firm may yet extend a console exclusive offer to Sony - and that it has considered doing so in the past.

"We are an independent studio so we can (a) Do whatever we want and (b) [Have the freedom] to announce something else next week if we want to," said Yerli.

He added: "Sony is a partner that we would definitely love to work with. A [PS3 exclusive] is something we considered before - we talked about it a lot, but for reasons of portfolio or timing in the past it didn't work out. But that doesn't mean in the future it wouldn't work.

"Sony is a great company, so is Nintendo and so is Microsoft. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses, and luckily our strengths are almost always complementary to their weaknesses."

However, Yerli said that making Kingdoms for Microsoft's console was a "natural fit".

"We wanted to see how it would feel like to just work for Microsoft or work on a project; with Sony, with Microsoft or with Nintendo, just a first-party relation," he commented.

"We have been talking with Microsoft for five or six years now about working together - and for some time I have said that I don't want to work [exclusively with a] first-party. The time came around where we said maybe this IP, Kingdoms, could be very strong for a first-party platform. We asked Microsoft and they said 'yes, that would be fantastic'."

We bloody bet they did. That trailer - as if you needed reminding - looks ace.

Crytek is currently working hard to complete Crysis 2 for EA Partners. It's a game that looks gorgeous, is fully playable in 3D and which Crytek reckons has the best AI in gaming history. One for the calendar, then.

Crysis 2 is out out in November for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Insomniac Have "Exciting Plans" For PAX Prime

Ever since Insomniac Games announced that they're working on a new IP with EA as publisher for multiple platforms, we've been intrigued. So intrigued that we started to build a time travel machine to travel into the future to see what they were up to. Let's just say, after a visit from the MI5, the desecration of a cow and some severe third degree burns, we had to put a stop to all that. When normality resumed though, we were still as curious.

So what are they up to!?
Well, in response to the question "Are you doing anything at PAX this year" [edited for clarity and spelling], the official Insomniac Games Twitter account responded, "Yes - we have very exciting plans for PAX we are going to announce soon!"

Did they just say exciting? And announce soon? How... exciting, I guess.
Whether Insomniac's plans will be as exciting as ours - ours involve free beer so we doubt it! - remain up for debate at the moment, but if they just so happen to tease their new EA IP, then consider us happy chappies.

Make sure you get along to PAX this year, it'll be a blast, as always. Load up on vitamins though, apparently the plague will make an appearance this year.

Playlogic Files For Bankruptcy

Following a horrible year, which has seen the Dutch developer and publisher gradually plunged deeper and deeper into debt, Playlogic has finally filed for bankruptcy.

Even in August 2009, the firm admitted to being in trouble, doubting the company's long-term viability going forward, stating that Playlogic's circumstances raise uncertainties about its "ability to continue as a going concern".

We think they mean a 'growing concern', as we're not entirely sure what a 'going concern' is, but Playlogic has said that it has "requested a delay of payments", in a move which is the Dutch equivalent of Chapter 11 - the US Bankruptcy Code. This applies to both Playlogic's internal development studio and publishing unit.

There's an entire list of factors that have contributed to Playlogic ending up in its current situation - detailed in recent SEC filings - including loan defaults, overdue payments and poor overall cash flow.

"Due to the Company’s cash flow situation, we are behind on payments to some of our vendors," reads one of the filings. "Some of these vendors have gone legal to collect their outstanding receivables."

Meanwhile, Playlogic claims it is owed money by major European distributing partner Koch Media, to the tune of €1.7 million ($2.4 million) as of December 2009. Legal proceedings are underway in Austria to reclaim the owed monies.

Regardless, Playlogic's future seems assured, and the outlook isn't good: "If the Company does not obtain any necessary financing, we may need to cease operations," reads another of the filings. "There is substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern."

They are known for their game "Fairytale Fights."

Hori's mesmerizing PS3 Slim LCD dock now available for import!

hori-ps3-lcd-dock.jpg

Love at first sight may be debatable, but we had a feeling we'd be into Hori's PS3 Slim LCD dock just as soon as we laid eyes on it. A few months after first appearing overseas, the simplistic device -- which mounts an 11.6-inch LCD atop your PlayStation 3 Slim console -- is ready to be imported into these great States of America. Play-Asia is coming through in the clutch once more, offering the gizmo to those situated far, far from the Land of the Rising Sun for $259.90. It's in stock and ready to ship within 24 hours, so we'd get it on it if you were planning to get on it. Just sayin'.

Insomniac Games has announced that it will be unveiling its next PlayStation 3 project anytime between now and PAX, which kicks off in early September.

Confirmation comes via the company’s latest newsletter, which reads: “We’re happy to reveal that we’ll be announcing our newest game sometime between now and the Penny-Arcade Expo over Labor Day weekend. We’re really excited to finally reveal this project, and we couldn’t resist being the first to share the news with you.”

“Want to be the first members of the public to see our new game being played with your own eyes? We’re bringing our new game to a very special Penny-Arcade Expo panel on Saturday evening (September 4th), at 6:30pm in the Serpent Theatre. G4TV’s Adam Sessler will moderate a panel with key creative talent from Insomniac Games as we discuss (and demo!) our upcoming PlayStation 3 project.”

Given the announcement makes no mention of any other console, it’s fair to assume the company isn’t talking about its upcoming mulitplatform outing and therefore suggests we can expect a first-party SCE game, the most obvious choice being Resistance 3.

With GamesCom taking place in late August, it is looking extremely likely we can expect the first details on the mystery project at the Cologne-based event. Stay tuned for more info as we get it.

BioShock Creators' Next Game Debuts Next Week, Trailer On Aug. 12

System Shock 3? BioShock 3? SWATshock? Ken Levine Dating Simulator? The next game from Irrational Games, makers of BioShock, will be revealed next week. Irrational's new podcast has some fun with the guesses.

Irrational Games, the Massachusetts-based developed studio headed by Ken Levine and largely responsible for BioShock, System Shock, SWAT 4, and Freedom Force, has been as quiet as a corpse about their next project since the 2007 release of BioShock. The studio will break their silence next week with a live demo for press in New York (Kotaku included, of course) and a CG trailer making its debut on August 12.

im playing through 2 right now and im really enjoying it. i was pretty skeptical at first to be honest, since it felt so much like the first one. but its a good game for sure. it can't compare to the 1st since that was one of the best games ive ever played, but definitely a fun game.

its kinda cool you are playing as a big daddy, but its just not the same as the first. doesn't make it as intense for some reason.

if its bioshock 3 theres no doubt it will be a good game, but at the same time theres no way they will top the first game. i cant really see them doing it while keeping the game in rapture.

Infinitec's USB streaming storage system shipping this month!

After making waves at CES 2010 for its promise to provide a virtually endless supply of data storage to game consoles, Infinitec's Infinite USB Memory Drive (IUM) fell off the radar as the company finalized their manufacturing and distribution plans. Now, several months later, the Dubai-based company has announced that the IUM's time has finally arrived, and starting today consumers can pre-order the system on their official website, with orders expected to ship on August 31.

If you're only just now hearing about the IUM, it is essentially a wireless data streaming system that allows users to connect their Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 to a computer and access and store information on its built-in hard drive or to a connected external storage system. The IUM looks just like a standard USB flash drive, but instead of built-in storage, it features a wireless chip that allows it to connect directly to a paired computer using a dedicated wireless network, which then streams data and media to and from your PC.

xbox-360-ps3-get-unlimited-storage-20100218115723674.jpg

Since the system uses a dedicated Wi-Fi connection generated by the IUM, what happens if you want to browse the web on your computer at the same time? Well, the IUM actually uses dual Wi-Fi technology to essentially configure your PC to connect to two networks – the IUM network and your home network – at once.

While wireless data storage and media streaming for game consoles is just one application for the IUM, there are a wide variety of other uses as well. Since it is identified as a typical USB flash drive and pairing and configuration takes place entirely on your PC, the system can stream media and provide storage for with anything from Blu-ray players to HDTVs to stereo systems. The IUM is also compatible with all major computer platforms, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The Infinite USB Memory Drive is available for pre-order on Infinitec's official website for $129.99.

PS4 Will Launch In 2014 With Killzone 4, Resistance 4 And GOW 4 As Launch Titles

You’ve heard the talk haven’t you? About how Sony will not allow Microsoft to release its next generation console before they do, and so, with the fear of losing its user base pounding incessantly at the thoughts of its executives, Sony will leave the PS3 behind and delve head first into the eighth and last generation of gaming consoles.

This won’t happen.

If Sony has learned one thing about gamers, is that they’re suckers for new “toys”. Doesn’t really matter what year they release a console, as long as the price is right, and the PlayStation logo is on there, it’ll sell like hot cakes. And now, with the advent of PSN, Sony’s base will most likely stay faithful to its service until the next PlayStation home console comes along.

Even one of Sony’s main bosses uttered this very thing.

Sony’s Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida:

“Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move,” Yoshida told industry Magazine, Develop, when asked why Sony hadn’t discussed the PS4 publicly as yet.

“Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

And I agree with him fully. Microsoft and Nintendo are most likely planning a 2012 release for the their next generation consoles, and for them, I think it’s right timing. Think about it: Although Nintendo launched around the same time with Sony, the Wii is basically a GameCube with Motion Control technology; the legendary company badly needs an upgraded system. And so it’s a veritable venture to release one soon, all the while boosting revenues and shareholder confidence.

Microsoft, too, must be eying 2012 seriously for many reasons. Although Redmond only recently released the Xbox 360 Slim, it knows, without doubt, that the days of its controversial console is coming to an end. Evidently, the PS3 is beginning to embarrass the Xbox 360. Especially technically, where the PS3’s raw power is beginning to outstrip by far, even the best efforts of developers who make exclusive games for Microsoft’s console.

Also, when 2012 arrives, it will be eight years since the Xbox 360 first came on the market. That’s well beyond the time period console makers release their next gen systems. Remember, Sony launched the PS2 in 2000 and six years later, the PS3 came on the scene. It would not only be a bad marketing move if Microsoft doesn’t release its new console in the next year and a half, it would also seriously damage the Xbox 360’s image. Why? Well, considering the PS3’s ahead of the Xbox 360 technically, it would literally render Microsoft’s console “old gen” by that time. Perhaps you’re aware that it’s already showing, therefore things will only go down hill rapidly in the coming years.

So Sony will be the only company left in the seventh generation of consoles.

For a while.

Suddenly, without warning, 2014 comes crashing in on the gaming world like a massive truck that just lost all bearings. The driver pumps hard, looking for brakes, hoping to stop. He finds none. All that’s left is a gaming world bewildered, awestruck, dumbfounded and amazed.

Sony just crashed everyone’s party. For a while there, Nintendo and Microsoft were hoping against hope that the company from the land of the rising sun would just quit gaming and allow the two to play chess. Stay away, Sony. Not so.

PS4’s now on the scene. Priced right, more future proof than any other on the market. Sexy. Millions starts disappearing off store shelves, etailers like amazon can’t keep up. Even the monster that is Walmart can’t keep the console in stuck.

But why’s it selling out so fast? For one, Sony learned an almost crippling lesson back in the PS3’s gloomy days. The console was priced at over $650 at launch, a turnoff for many gamers who then set their sights on Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which, by the way, managed to outsell Sony’s PS3 before its younger brother would step in: Xbox 720.

The other reason was the many PS3 exclusive titles that launched with the system.

Killzone 4:

Killzone is one of the most recognizable titles on the PlayStation, and in gaming for that matter. After Sony unleashed the third installment on the PS3, the giant allowed Guerrilla Games, Killzone’s developer, to go after new ventures. And so the prospect of the next Killzone launching on PS3 faded. Time ran out but it benefited the PS4.

As soon as the game’s fans heard the news, they couldn’t resist. “Where is the nearest GameStop?” Zack asked, he’d already made his decision.

Resistance 4:

By the time Resistance 3 came out, it was already late 2011. Its developer, Insomniac Games, had recently signed a deal with EA Partners affording them to do multiplatform games. Sony knew when that happened they’d have to wait longer for Resistance installments. Part four would not see a PS3 release.

It did, however, release on the PS4 at launch, and again, just like the killzone fans, Resistance supporters bought the console for their beloved franchise.

God of War 4:

Many had thought that God of War 4 would come to life on PS3, it did not. Apparently they’d forgotten how long it took Santa Monica to release the last: four years.

Did Sony strategically planned the game’s PS4 release? It was hardly a tough question to answer. Of course they did. God of War is a system seller; God of War III had once again proven that point, and Sony wasn’t about to mess up the tradition.

When the game landed a month later on the PS4, you could hardly find the console anywhere. It had proven to be the best hardware sales boost Sony had ever received from a game.

In the end, not Microsoft, nor was it Nintendo who won the eighth generation of consoles install base battle. Sony’s planning had proven successful. They didn’t follow the other two companies down the tempting path, it was their destiny not Sony’s. And although the media was once again spelling the hardware giant’s doom, Sony never budged. It was already accustomed to the judgments. Instead, a game plan formulated by the company’s top executives, developers, and fans alike, was followed precisely. No wavering, not even when it looked tough.

And so it was in the eighth generation of consoles.
