Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have announced that they are hosting a We are PlayStation photography competition that has now launched in Europe. Electronic Theatre ImageThe team?s jubilation at getting a BUZZ! question right; the laughter of a room full of SingStar fans; the entertaining journeys playing your PlayStation Portable! They?re all classic PlayStation moments that you?ve seen or experienced hundreds of times - but can you capture them in a photo? If you can, your name could be in the hat to win some great prizes. There?s also the possibility of a serious cash prize, the possibility of the images being used in future PlayStation campaigns as well as a new Sony D-SLR a350 digital camera and lens. Get snapping and upload your photos by the 16th March 2009 for a chance to win.

The rules are simple ? capture the perfect image of you, your friends or your family enjoying a PlayStation moment with your PLAYSTATION3, PlayStation2 or PlayStation Portable and upload it to www.weareplaystation.com. There are different categories your photos could enter: Caught in the Moment, Unexpected Places, PlayStation Parties, True Love and Endless Play. A panel of guest judges will assess top user-rated snaps on their merits and work out which photographer deserves the top prize of 1000 euros and a Sony D-SLR a350 camera. Ten runners up will receive cash prizes of 100 euros each, while the next best 100 entries will get their hands on a top PlayStation game or vouchers for the PlayStation Store. All entries have the chance of being used in a future PlayStation marketing campaign.

Of course, PlayStation is all about its community ? and that?s why we?re asking you to judge the first round of the competition. PlayStation fans can visit the website and decide which shots will be put before the judges by rating each photo with a score from one to five. Also, every time you Electronic Theatre Imageenter the site, you can give your favourite image a secret ?Super Vote? which will be used to determine the finalists in case several entries generate the same overall rating. The images with the highest average score and, in the event of a tie, with the highest number of ?Super Votes? will go before the judging panel ? so it pays to get everyone you know onto the site and voting.

With so many great moments for so many different PlayStation communities, this is the chance not only to show off your natural eye for a photograph, but also to show the world just how much fun you have with your friends ? and a PLAYSTATION3, PlayStation2 or PlayStation Portable. Visit www.weareplaystation.com for competition terms and conditions and get snapping!

PlayStation Network Regular Scheduled Maintenance

PlayStation Network will undergo maintenance tomorrow, June 9th. Maintenance is expected to start at 8am Pacific and will last for several hours, until approximately 8:30pm Pacific.

During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store or Account Management, and may encounter some difficulty while signing in to PSN.

Stay tuned to the PlayStation Twitter feed for updates and a notice when PSN is fully back online. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

No you cant go online, trust me i just tried to log in and all you get is a message saying the psn is down for maintenance,so you cant even play online

Well it would be pretty hard to get the server stuff done and ready for the pounding of stuff coming in the next week with all the e3 stuff and the 3d update that is to come out on the 10th, with 20 or so million people playing online.i dont mind the down time you can still earn trophies or catch up on some movies;)

Shinji Mikami: JRPG's 'were never popular'

Resident Evil mastermind Shinji Mikami has stated his belief that Japanese RPGs aren’t witnessing a decline in popularity in western territories, as they were never popular to begin with.

Speaking during a chinwag with CVG on the state of the genre in the west, Mikami stated, “I think it is because Japanese RPGs were really never all that popular in the west to begin with,” adding, "I think the best way of interpreting things is that they aren't getting less popular; they weren't very popular from the start."

This isn’t the first time an industry figure has chimed in with their thoughts on the subject; BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk said last December that he felt the JRPG scene was in decline as the genre was lacking in “evolution.”

"The fall of the JRPG in large part is due to a lack of evolution, a lack of progression. They kept delivering the same thing over and over. They make the dressing better, they look prettier, but it's still the same experience,” he said.

A bunch of those japanese RPG's do run together. Almost every single person in those games has the same haircut. I still happen to like role playing though so I don't care if the experience is similar, I still want more of them! Especially strategy RPG's!!!!

Yeah.. I LOVE RPG games. The final Fantasy, Tales (series), Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest (etc) games are the best ever made!

Do PS3s Settle?

So I have a question... I have a new PS3 slim and every once in a while it cracks and creeks like a house settling. My 60GB PS3 never made this sound.. I'm sure it's alright, but I still wanted to ask you guys...

Well, after I posted this I read on google that it's pretty common with the slims. Maybe due to heat...

I'll leave this up for a day or so just incase anyone else has this issue and wondered. I'll merge it tomorrow.

New PS3 controller - Looks like a 360 controller

This is the best PlayStation 3 controller right now, precisely because it's not shaped like a PS3 controller.

Power A spent a good deal of time taking what's best about the Xbox 360 controller—the most natural "traditional" controller—and bringing it to the PS3. It's called the PS3 Pro Elite, and it's only $50. You have your left analog stick up on the top left and D-Pad down on the bottom. The palm parts extend much lower, and are coated with a grippy, but breathable material, which makes a huge difference when you play games for hours on end.

The only thing that Power A didn't bring over from the 360 are the shoulder buttons. The L1, R1 buttons are more mushy, and the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons are super mushy, like the PS3's. This is my only complaint—I wish they went all the way and brought the Xbox's triggers over.

Oh, and you still get Sixaxis capabilities, so there really is no sacrifice. Plus you get glowing buttons, and true wireless, albeit a third-party wireless that you need a dongle for. The dongle is included.

For a cheaper, wired solution, Power A has a $20 controller that sacrifices stuff like Sixaxis, but still gives you the 360-style shape that will be great for secondary and tertiary and quaternary controllers that you only use when friends come over. [Power A]
