I remember enjoying this on a single viewing in early 00's. Questionable I was this time around; as you can't trust a teenage brain sometimes. However, I just watched the 101 Films bluray release & thoroughly enjoyed it, in fact revelled in at times. It's quite the romp & features a fantastic soundtrack, with plenty of notable cameos. The director sprinkles inspiration from Trainspotting & Lock Stock throughout, for this 18th century depiction of England. The dirty filthy feel of everything feels submersive & amongst some fantastic performances, chemistry & costume designs it allows for comedic/dramatic tonal shifts to become part of it's charm. Something which i think may have been misunderstood at the time, given this has a shocking 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even if this isn't your cup of tea, it's clearly a cult film now and reviews ranging from 1999-2005 are severely outdated and show just how films can sometimes be lost on closet minded film "experts". Would love to see a 4K restoration and some extra content. Liv Tyler, Michael Gambon, Robert Carlyle, Alan Cumming all brilliant, I could go on but it'd be
pointless
for I'd list the whole cast. Surely a boutique picks this up? I also fancy there's a directors cut out there somewhere. Feel like they chopped some runtime in places but tbh I appreciate allowing the audience to fill in the filler and just bloody enjoy the good stuff! Added to my list of must watch each year for sure

A charming, fun, & well-shot time capsule into 90s British filmmaking.
