Best Buy has quietly begun rolling out branded disc rental kiosks in Canada — filling a void left when Blockbuster Canada ceased operations.
Best Buy Canada Ltd., which is a separately run unit under the Best Buy Co. corporate umbrella, has launched 45 kiosks at 7-Eleven, Mac’s and Best Buy locations in Edmonton, Calgary, Grand Prairie, Winnepeg, Regina, and Saskatoon, among other cities.
DVDs rent for $1.99 a day; $2.99 for Blu-ray Disc depending on the province, according to a customer service rep. In Saskatchewan, DVDs rent for $2.99 per night and $3.99 for Blu-ray. The kiosks do not rent video games.
Rentals, which include new releases every Tuesday, can be reserved and queues created online to registered users at http://bestbuy.mydvdkiosks.net.
The kiosks are manufactured by DVDNow Kiosks of Vancouver, which operate more than 2,500 kiosks in the United States, South Africa, Australia, Norway and The Netherlands.
Since the departure of Blockbuster, Canada has had no national disc rental service. Netflix bowed streaming-only operations in the country in 2010.
Minneapolis-based Best Buy recently launched kiosks domestically selling select consumer electronics and mobile phones as it seeks to extend the brand while downsizing its retail footprint.
