I never minded all the extra stuff Lucas added over the years, it was his vision ultimately and was restricted at the time by the technology available to him. Who am we to say that one version hindered by technical restraints is any better or worse than another that has been updated to suit his artistic vision. Other directors have gone back when remastering older classics and have added/tinkered with scenes in movies. It's the older hardcore fanbase that have an issue but I think most of us here and in the age range where the first versions we saw were probably the special editions so doesn't really affect us all that much.

The only thing I didn't like was Anakin being updated at the end of ROTJ, I get why they went for that (in a way) it's more the fact he was kinda looking off in a different direction to the other characters and had some awkward uncomfortable grin on his face, just looked out of place.. how would Luke have even known that was his father lol

Yeah he was well within his rights to change things on his creation. BUT.... we as fans are also well within our rights to criticise him if those changes are unnecessary or plain baffling. George Lucas of the 70s and 80s was a very different (and much more talented) man to the one in the mid 90s onwards - just look at the vast ocean of difference in quality between his two SW trilogies. The old, senile Lucas should have left his earlier work well alone.

I think you're being too kind there - there is no defending the sheer stupidity of that altered scene. RotJ was easily the most butchered by the Lucas, especially when you consider that Vader vocal addition .

For me it's just the fact that the changes were CGI (obvious CGI) it looks strange next to the real props and costumes. That's not to say I don't enjoy watching them, some of the scenes just look like they are from a different movie.

Star Wars fans are well within their rights to have an opinion on Lucas' incessant tinkering with the OT simply because he refuses to release decent quality versions of his original creation - the version they remember and the version that they fell in love with! I guess it's an argument whether or not an artist's creation 'belongs' to them - I'm of the opinion Lucas never really understood what made Star Wars work, and that as soon as a movie is released and shared with an audience in theatres, it is no longer 'owned' by the creator.

Also worth noting that yes - other directors revisit/alter their work - but they tend to do so in much less drastic ways than what Lucas has done with each new release of the OT. Ridley Scott for example has revisited Blade Runner a few times, but has also had the decency to release the multiple versions of that movie in high-quality home releases. A lot of fans don't like the implications the Final Cut have regarding Deckard, likewise Spielberg's digital alterations of ET were also derided to the point he reversed them for later releases, so this isn't an issue isolated to the Star Wars franchise... people are passionate about film

George's most recent tinkering with the OT especially are largely so utterly moronic as to be baffling, sometimes even introducing new issues that weren't there before - R2 hiding behind the rocks for example (how did he get there - and why was this a problem before?!). Other alterations completely change the emotional feel of a scene - Han shooting first, Vader's laughable 'Nooo' scream in RotJ, and Hayden's force ghost appearing in place of 'old Vader' later on (both of these changes make no sense other than to legitimise the existence of the PT).

Personally I don't mind changes that 'tidy things up', cleaning up matte lines, fixing continuity issues, removing camera/crew from shots etc... but adding in new CGI FX (which now look old and horribly dated) and filling the screen with an assortment of cartoon characters is completely unnecessary/distracting.

He could've gotten everyone off his back by releasing the original cinematric cuts on Blu-Ray, properly. Everyone's happy, end of story. But no, he has to bury these forever. And no, the awful half-assed non-anamorphic DVD versions with black bars everywhere don't count. That release bordered on passive-aggressiveness.

Really- the thing we need to consider about he special editions are the insult that it commits unto the people who originally worked on the film.

Think of all the people at ILM who poured their blood, sweat, and tears in to creating the original battle of Yavin- all of the work that GOT Star Wars the Academy Award Nomination for best visual effects. Now think of the Special Edition, where the entirety of the Battle fo Yavin was replaced with CGI. Every shred of someone's hard work and presence in the film is completely removed, and the film loses the impact of the technical challenges of which earned Star Wars that initial respect.

From a film editing standpoint- the addition of all the deleted scenes in to the first Star Wars film is downright ridiculous. The best thing about the original film is it's concise narrative editing- the movie is clean and does not have any excessive information bogging it down. This is hindered in the special edition with unnecessary things such as Han Solo talking to Jabba- because every line of dialogue was stated mere seconds ago in the cantina with Greedo- there's no new information here and it does nothing except detail the pacing.

What a load of yawn!!!!

Happy to talk about opinions on Star Wars in another topic/site not here where the discussion is about the steel book.

Yeah couldn't agree more mate, don't think you'll find many others disagreeing with that.

Can't speak for all moderators but I've got far worse things to be concerned about than folks discussing Star Wars movies in a Star Wars movie related thread, although I do agree that it should be done in a non-steelbook thread. So I will ask this just the once - any further chat to do with Star Wars movies outside of Rogue One please find or create a thread relevant to this in the movie area. Further posts will be deleted without notice

Much love!

It's much more fun talking about Star Wars than moaning about the aparent washed out colours of the steelbook.......

Any ideas what the slips will be? Maybe a K2S0 slip like the BB8 slip for the Force Awakens?
