Well, it's not just a matter of shortening the running time. It is completely re edited.
FWIW - Stephen King prefers the theatrical version.

^ Admittedly not up there with that but the longest film / documentary I've ever watched is SHOAH (Eureka MOC #100-104 boxset) with a runtime of about 9 1/2 hours (566 mins) . . . or 17 hours approx. (1,006 mins) total runtime for the boxset and I remember years ago when it was screened here in the UK - on C4 if I'm not mistaken - it was split down the middle and shown over two nights sans adverts.

Yes, IT (187 mins) and SALEM'S LOT (184 mins) are tiddlers by comparison (lol)
