Ok, normally I don't get pulled into these difference of opinion debates but I really have to defend Scarface. Whatever about the artwork, I can see how some might like it. It is different, I'll give it that, I'm just not feeling it myself.
I highly respect others views, I really do, but seriously you're the first person I've ever heard say they dislike this film. Everything about it is spot on, the acting, pacing, score, cinematography, story, costumes etc etc.
It was one of the highlights for the careers of both De Palma & Pacino. I happen to think it's an out and out masterpiece. Yes I know it spawned that annoying American celebrity fad in which they felt the need to plaster images from the film all over their mansions, but come on, enlighten me please, for the love of God tell me what you didn't like about it.
Only God Forgives, I get it, Under The Skin, I get it, they are extremely divisive movies, but everyone I've ever met loves this movie. I even know some girls that have this among their collections, that tells me that it's not all macho, gunfire porn, violent ego trips for the male viewer only, that's simply speaks volumes about the strong and entertaining story it's trying to tell.
For me it will remain in my top 10 movies of all time til the day I die.
I know it's off-topic, but to fulfill a dying wish: I adore Al Pacino and love his perfomances in most of his movies, but his acting here is no more than a caricature with no interesting development whatsoever. He is just angry ALL the time, and the 'no wife, no kids'-scene came so out out-of-the-blue that I cracked up the first time I saw it. However I think the director's to blame in this case because the overall acting is terrible. I think DePalme did a far better job with Carlito's Way. The message this movie tried to deliver is cliche, over-simple and shallow.
The ending is so rediculous than up to this day I'm still in doubt whether this is meant to be a comedy.
The film is nicely shot and edited, I give it that. Really didn't troll, I've often wondered myself why I don't like it and most of my friends do.
