I remember watching and liking this when I was a kid. Not sure how I will feel about it now. Don't think I'll shell out for a steelbook, but maybe later.

this is an awesome movie, end of story

if you dont like this movie, i dont blame you

im chinese so i grew up watching kung fu dramas so i can actually understand the references and jokes in this movie

If you're going to start doing martial arts films though, why do this first? It's not even the best Stephen Chow movie!

Can't believe this is 13 years old! I saw it when I was around 14 and thought it was hilarious!
I don't even like football but still liked it.

If this is glossy and embossed and around 15 quid I may actually buy it...hilarious film...how's that for hypocrisy! And yes, far far funnier than 'Kung Fu Hustle' I thought.

I hope this has both cuts of the film. It is so funny and the concept is totally Genius. There are several memorable scenes in this movie. Well done Stephen Chow and lets have more. Kung Fu hustle next please.

It's definitely not a better film than Kung Fu Hustle. But depending on your sense of humor, you might find it funnier .. or not.

I'm up for the pre-order. It'll replace my DVD copy but anyone know how the transfer is?

And on a side note, the sport was identified as Soccer before it was sold as Football. Also, in other countries where sports like NFL and AFL exist, it's helpful to have a differentiating term like Soccer.

Association Football was first played in 1863 after the 'Laws of the Game' were originally codified by the 'Football Association' (founded the same year) in England.

My club was one of the 12 founder members of 'The Football League' in 1888; the oldest professional league in the world.
At no point in history has the game been officially known or 'identified' as 'soccer'.

'American football' is nothing more or less than a bastardized game of rugby; ref. Giles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer for a very eloquent putdown.

Australian Rules ditto; but a real man's game & minus the Buffy jibes :)

Almost all valid points. I can only say from what I've heard or read on the use of either term. I'm not placing a judgement on the sport because I enjoy football and most other sport, but just contextualising the use of the term Soccer. As it stands, it is known as Soccer in some parts of the world so historically it does exist and therefore has existed as Soccer.

I use both terms freely but I understand that it might irk some people on a cultural level.

And to connect this to the thread, Shaolin soccer is funny. :p

Also called soccer, in Canada ;) But it doesn't mean anything, since we didn't win yet :p

What's the point of "debating" etymology when Wikipedia exists?

"The rules of association football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863 and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word 'association.'"

P.S. This movie has almost no redeeming qualities, and I hate myself for even considering for a millisecond of buying this in the future because of the steelbook.

:hilarious: Nice. Next time one of my English friends complains about my calling it soccer I'll just say, "Hey, your country invented the term!"

I think I will try to give this steelbook a go if I can get one with only 2000 available. I recall seeing it once when it was newish, but can't remember anything really.

The Film is named "Shaloin Soccer". Period.

...why do ppl feel the need to soil this thread with a completely pointless debate ? :ugh:

anyway, i've seen parts of this and thought it was prety cool, but dull matte finishing and a £18+ price point means NO BUY :movie:
