I think the 5000 limit is for whole of Japan, not just AmazonJP.

I found an order link on HMV-JP

At first I tried to "Add to cart" but it said it was sold out. Then I browsed the other versions of the film and somehow a checkout screen appeared and I was able to preorder! It would only let me order 1 copy though...

And the HMV-JP preorder has a set of 8 postcards.

Hopefully, Skyfall amazon.jp have this postcards like Skyfall's HMV.jp & Skyfall's amazon.fr

Looks like YesAsia is the only place where they still have copies. Clearly the run of 5000 is being shared between all Japanese retailers, which explains why Amazon sold out of their allocation so quickly.

It's tough. All depends on the slip. Only pictures of the slips so far is the mock up of the Taiwan version and it looks incredible but when Japan get it right it's usually the best in terms of quality.

Went ahead and ordered the Japan version as well for $51+. I could change my mind later on but just wanted to make sure I get an order in. 5,000 copies is pretty excessive though.

While it's not going to be the rarity that some Japanese releases have been, I don't think 5k is that huge for this particular title in that market. Per capita it's actually a smaller print run than say the 3000 of Roger Rabbit produced for the UK market. And when you consider that even averagely popular movies like Unstoppable and B-movie duds like Iron Sky get runs of 4k, then only an additional 1k units for a box office smash like Skyfall isn't that much more. Plus which 007 is one of the few Western film franchises that is pretty big in Japan, so take up for it will be strong.

And I agree with you that many Japanese are likely to buy Skyfall steelbook to watch the movie. Hence there is not likely to be many sealed mint copies around in about 6 months time.

I think part of the reason Iron Sky went OOS quickly is that Japanese resellers grabbed much of the stock. It's currently available from 22 Amazon merchants (each of whom are likely to have multiple copies). It's also readily available in many stores and is common on Yahoo Auctions too, so in Japan it's not hard to get at all. It just seems rare outside of Japan because of the relatively low numbers exported.
